Baumann and Andy Wood from Unity Motorsports Garage recently discussed on YouTube that many of the issues with the Ford 10-speed have been resolved, including the CDF drum concern that affected earlier models. Newer iterations of the 10R80 have shown to be a viable upgrade as a result.

The Mercury Grand Marquis involved in this project is essentially stock when it comes to the engine. It features long-tube headers with a complete Stainless Works exhaust, but besides that, it’s equipped with a factory two-valve V8. Therefore, any change in drivability can be attributed to the 10-speed matched with a 3.08 rear end in this vehicle. Baumann mentioned he considered a 2.73 rear due to the extensive range of gear ratios, even though that might sound wild if you’re accustomed to something like 4.88s with a four-speed.

US Shift captured the majority of the swap process on their YouTube channel, showcasing an S197 Mustang outfitted with a 10R80. The shop utilizes billet SunCoast Performance flex plates in these vehicles, as the aftermarket company already provides them for eight-bolt crank engines and recently expanded support for six-bolt Ford modular V8s. “You shouldn’t be allowed to have this much fun with 270 hp,” Baumann remarked following a brief test drive.

If you’re concerned about how the 10R80 handles increased power, just look at the supercharged 5.0-liter Coyote trucks producing 700 hp without any issues. The reality is that modern vehicles generate more torque than a 20-year-old F-150 or Mustang could have ever envisioned, which necessitates a stronger stock transmission. I’m not claiming they’re indestructible—what is these days?—but it appears to be an excellent combination.

Lastly, for those with a preference for GM, US Shift is working on products for the 10L90. That transmission was collaboratively designed with Ford, although it has its own distinct shift programming, a different valve body, and some GM-specific components. The first example will be an F-Body Trans-Am that they are currently developing. Personally, I find that idea quite appealing.
