History appears to repeat itself, and for some inexplicable reason, General Motors is its own greatest adversary.
The groundbreaking EV1 was discontinued. The Chevrolet Volt was phased out. And then the Chevrolet Bolt was retired. Yet, astonishingly, the Chevrolet Bolt has made a comeback, perhaps temporarily, requiring considerable effort from General Motors to reintroduce the budget electric vehicle to the market.
From relocating the manufacturing line, which is clearly a complex undertaking and doesn’t merely involve a few U-Haul trucks and tools, to changing electric motors, redesigning certain subframes, equipping the car with a new battery pack, enhancing the charging equipment, and integrating a Tesla-style NACS charge port, alongside meticulously refreshing aspects of the design such as the lighting and dashboard, GM accomplished it. Naturally, General Motors’ remarkable Level 2 hands-free driver-assist technology known as Super Cruise remains available.
Priced under $30,000 and boasting a range exceeding 250 miles per charge, the Chevrolet Bolt stands out as more than just the most affordable electric vehicle in America. It represents exceptional value regardless of the powertrain, featuring an incredibly low ownership cost, advanced technology, and fulfilling the genuine promise of affordable electric vehicles. It truly stands out.
Nevertheless, the entire narrative is insane. The reality that GM discontinued this cherished vehicle, which fueled public outrage so great that the company reversed its decision, only to announce it would again be discontinued in 18 months, is a perplexing tale.
Editor-in-Chief Kyle Cheromcha spent a day with the rejuvenated Bolt and the engineering and executive team responsible for its revival. We delve into the backstory on how this (affordable) icon was resurrected, its significance, and what the future looks like for this model.
