Audi Strives to Develop More 'Emotional' Vehicles Like the R8, Yet Is Currently Concentrating on Different Priorities

The people at Ingolstadt certainly crafted something special with the new Audi Nuvolari. While in certain respects it serves as a transitional supercar, it also highlights the company’s dedication to creating vehicles that resonate on an emotional level. Sadly for them, Audi is focused on reinventing nearly all of its product offerings.

As you might expect, this complicates the ability to pursue passion projects. During such times, Audi aims to capitalize on its current assets, and in an era of increasingly tech-driven cars, much of that hinges on technology. We might not see a budget-friendly Nuvolari, but its technological advances will certainly influence Audi’s broader range.

Rouven Mohr, Audi’s CTO and R&D head, referred to the Nuvolari as the company’s “North Star” in a Q&A session at Monterey Car Week attended by The Drive. This brief but impactful model will assist Audi in refining its overall portfolio.

Which vehicles may gain from the Nuvolari’s specialized performance features? Audi hasn’t quite determined that yet. Mohr states that the company desires to return to crafting cars that entice enthusiasts, but the present circumstances render any commitments uncertain.

“You’ll see other passionate products,” Mohr stated. “This doesn’t imply R8—yes or no. That decision is still pending. Our priorities have shifted for now.”

“But you can rest assured it won’t be the last emotional car from Audi, as this is something that [CEO] Gernot Dollner, Massimo, and I all advocate for,” Mohr elaborated. “We’re all passionate about cars. Emotional connection is vital for a brand looking to increase its sales volume. You need that emotional bond.”

Audi is optimistic that the insights gained from the Nuvolari will enhance the engagement levels of its other vehicles as well. For instance, algorithms from its innovative all-wheel-drive system will filter down into Audi’s more popular models.

“You will observe a different execution in the standard vehicles of the intelligent drivetrain, which means the torque allocation is based on a very sophisticated, self-learning framework,” Mohr explained. “You will witness this in the future of Quattro, even in the everyday vehicles, in two distinct configurations.”

“One configuration aims to optimize traction and driving enjoyment,” Mohr noted. “But this technology can also be utilized to create the most efficient four-wheel drive system that is self-learning.”

The former will be standard for RS models, according to Mohr, while the latter will serve as the foundation for its non-enthusiast range. This advancement is feasible as Quattro is no longer solely dictated by its mechanical components.

“Previously, it was always about hardware, determining the type of central differential used,” Mohr clarified. “Today, it’s a combination of hardware preferences and the types of functionality and software intelligence that facilitate the actuation.”

However, when it comes to tangible hardware, there are numerous constraints to take into account.

“It’s evident that not everything is feasible in a [typical] vehicle. I mean, we can’t implement titanium aluminum rings embedded in the carbon structure, like what’s done in the rear wing,” Mohr pointed out.

“Nevertheless, I will say that the signature click sound, the perfect balance of tactile elements and digital interaction. This sensation ingrained in the vehicle has always been Audi’s forte. You arrive, close the door, and it provides an incredibly solid closure sound; you settle in the car and feel at ease, you feel complete. This is an aspect present in the Nuvolari, and it will also manifest in future Audi models,” he remarked.

Mohr believes Audi connects best with drivers when it dares to be different.

“Like the original TT,” Mohr suggested. “People were thinking, ‘Oh, what is this?’ Our Avant story also illustrates that we often veered in a slightly different direction from what others were pursuing. In those instances, Audi has consistently thrived.”

And do not anticipate Audi’s forthcoming gems to be limited to the European market.

“America is a significant focus for us, particularly now,” Mohr stated. “We aim to bolster the American market since Audi has unfortunately lost some awareness in the US over the years.”

We’ll be waiting—some with less patience than others.

**Audi Strives to Develop More ‘Emotional’ Vehicles Similar to the R8, While Currently Diverted by Other Focuses**

In the competitive arena of the automotive sector, Audi has consistently been acknowledged for its combination of luxury, performance, and innovative technology. Nevertheless, the brand is now aiming for a deeper emotional bond with its vehicles, much like the thrilling experience provided by the Audi R8. Despite this pursuit, the company is presently prioritizing other strategic directions that might temporarily distract from this objective.

The Audi R8, a premier supercar, has become emblematic of the brand’s performance attributes and design philosophy. Its mid-engine design, captivating looks, and exhilarating driving characteristics have earned it a loyal fanbase among enthusiasts. Audi’s ambition to extend the emotional allure of the R8 throughout its entire lineup indicates a growing acknowledgment that today’s consumers desire more than mere practicality; they yearn for passion and excitement in their driving capabilities.

To realize this aspiration, Audi is investigating various methods to imbue its cars with a sense of emotional connection. This encompasses an emphasis on design aspects that elicit strong sentiments, improved driving characteristics that emphasize driver engagement, and the incorporation of state-of-the-art technologies that foster a more immersive experience. The objective is to ensure that every model, from sedans to SUVs, reflects the same emotional depth that the R8 provides.

However, Audi’s current focus is heavily impacted by the industry’s transition towards electrification and sustainability. As the automotive environment evolves, Audi is directing considerable efforts towards developing electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid technologies. This strategic shift is crucial not only for adhering to strict emission standards but also for addressing the surging consumer demand for eco-friendly options.

The shift towards electric mobility presents both obstacles and opportunities for Audi. While the emphasis on EVs may briefly overshadow the crafting of emotionally engaging vehicles, the brand is dedicated to making sure that its electric models uphold the performance and enjoyment that Audi aficionados anticipate. The forthcoming Audi e-tron GT exemplifies this, as it seeks to merge the brand’s performance legacy with electric capabilities, demonstrating that emotional driving experiences can indeed exist within the EV landscape.

Additionally, Audi is investing in autonomous driving technologies and connectivity features that enrich the entire driving experience. These advancements aim to establish a seamless bond between the driver and the vehicle, nurturing a more profound emotional connection. As these innovations progress, Audi envisions a future where emotional involvement is not solely tied to the thrill of driving but also to the relationship between the driver and his or her car.

In summary, while Audi currently focuses on electrification and innovative advancements, the brand remains dedicated to crafting more emotionally resonant vehicles reminiscent of the R8. By harmonizing the requirements of sustainability with the desire for exhilarating driving experiences, Audi intends to redefine what it means to connect with a car in today’s world. As the company maneuvers through these priorities, the promise of emotionally engaging vehicles is on the horizon, ready to enchant a new generation of drivers.
