The directional pad, utilized for changing what’s displayed on the minuscule digital instrument cluster positioned oh-so-far-away in this car, is comparatively roomy, and overall, I was genuinely impressed by the absence of a learning curve here.
To be fair, this experience is more distinctive to automotive journalists than to most individuals. We critique the minor differences in car manufacturers’ infotainment interfaces, ergonomics, or software reasoning because we hop into different vehicles on a weekly or monthly basis. This isn’t something the average person contends with; they simply purchase a car and get accustomed to it. Nevertheless, I believe that logical design and engineering are principles worth pursuing and, despite the off-putting shape of the Uncharted’s steering wheel, it is an exceptionally sensible tool.
There’s another element I appreciate about this design, and that would be the paddles. In the context of Subaru and Toyota’s electric vehicles, the regenerative braking force can be adjusted up or down off-throttle, with four levels of intensity available. I understand that everyone has their own views on regenerative braking, but as someone who, frankly, dislikes one-pedal driving, I value the precision with which you can adjust the car’s behavior, and I definitely welcome the simplicity.
Most electric vehicles require navigating through a menu or two to modify this setting, while Subaru has positioned it directly in front of the driver, enabling you to tailor the vehicle’s performance to whatever scenario you’re facing. Honestly, this is how all electric vehicles should function.
My sole complaint is that the Uncharted doesn’t retain what level of regen you left it at after the last time you drove the car, always reverting to the lowest setting. Again, this doesn’t particularly bother me because overly aggressive energy recovery drives me insane, but there’s no tangible reason the vehicle can’t just remember that selection.
Overall, the steering wheel in the Uncharted genuinely caught me off guard. It has the look of something alien and advanced, yet it’s in reality quite straightforward, and I wish more electric vehicles were created this way—like conventional cars. Too many manufacturers get lost in the convoluted notion that electric vehicles are spaceships needing intricate, esoteric controls and user-facing software, which ultimately deters potential buyers and frustrates those who take the leap. Many attributes that make a good gasoline car or hybrid also contribute to a good electric one, and it’s that philosophy that has generally left me quite satisfied with the Uncharted.
