Back when I wrote about the John Deere 9RX 830, it was among the world’s most powerful tractors with 913 max horsepower. I presume it still is, but it’s now a ways off from the new (and self-proclaimed) top dog. It’s called the Zoomlion 9DX, and it combines a big diesel with an 800-volt hybrid electric powertrain to make 1,600 hp and something like 5,300 lb-ft of torque.
If you’ve never heard of Zoomlion, there’s a good reason for that. It’s a Chinese brand that only sells a few products in the U.S. market—mainly forklifts and scissor lifts, as far as I can tell. Like with automotive, though, Chinese manufacturers are knocking on the door of the nation’s ag industry.
Policies and politics aside, Zoomlion makes some big promises about the 9DX. The manufacturer claims it’ll run nearly 25 miles per hour on any terrain, and on slopes as steep as 12 degrees. Importantly, its hydraulic capacity is rated at 168 gallons per minute, which is equal to the range-topping John Deere I mentioned earlier. That’s important info for farmers with big implements to run, from fertilizer rigs to seeders.
It’s admittedly frustrating that Zoomlion didn’t publish many specifics about the powertrain. That 1,600-hp figure is from the horse’s mouth, for what it’s worth, but there was no mention of what engine it runs or how large the battery pack is. Zoomlion uses a variant of the Cummins X15 in its ZR400U rotary drilling rig, and that could possibly be under the hood of this here tractor.
Pretty much the only other details we have on the 9DX are that its cab is independently suspended and its tracks are 30 inches wide for super traction.
I have my doubts that we’ll ever see a Zoomlion 9DX tractor tilling up U.S. soil. Not only does our government place heavy tariffs on Chinese agricultural equipment, but I also don’t know that many farmers would be on board. Although many American brands aren’t as domestic as they once were, this is a demographic that values country of origin above most others. Also, maintenance and repairs on a 1,600-hp hybrid tractor are likely anything but simple, and it’s not like there’s a dealer network to depend on here.
In any case, this seems like one of those technological feats that we’ll have to witness and either admire or disdain from afar—kind of like the Yangwang U9 Extreme hypercar that just ran 312 miles per hour.
