Installing a 511-Cubic-Inch Godzilla V8 Engine in a Ford Ranger to Boost Performance

can’t get enough of Ford’s Godzilla V8. Since it debuted in the 2020 Ford Super Duty, the engine has been integrated into numerous performance projects. We’ve showcased a variety of 7.3-liter Mustangs on this platform, but this vehicle crafted by Ben Strader stands out. It’s a 2001 Ford Ranger, which originally featured a 4.0-liter V6 as its largest factory engine, and instead of installing a standard Godzilla, Strader enlarged it to 511 cubic inches. As you can imagine, it’s a blast.

I spotted Strader family’s truck on my Facebook feed recently. You see, while Ben handled much of the mechanical work, it’s his daughter Ally Strader who’s clocking nine-second quarter-miles in it. The Ranger rockets down the drag strip with 800 horsepower and 721 lb-ft of torque available, all achieved without any boost. Just sheer displacement, baby.

When you amplify the displacement this significantly, you must upgrade the rest of the hardware accordingly. Hence, it employs a 4.5-inch crankshaft accompanying the .030-over bore. The heads are stunning works of art with CNC-porting and upgraded valve springs, crafted by Strader’s own company, 10K Technology. You can infer from its name they possess extensive knowledge about high-rpm engines, so if anyone is fit to construct such a powerful, naturally aspirated V8, it’s him. And although the Godzilla doesn’t rev all the way to 10,000 rpm, he notes that it reaches about 7,300 rpm.

The engine presents an impressive sight even when stationary. NXTGEN Engineering from Australia produced the billet valve covers, and the 59-millimeter individual throttle bodies are hard to miss. It sits significantly high in the engine compartment, which necessitated the installation of a cowl hood that fits over it. But also take note of what’s beneath the engine, too.

Considering the engine’s weight and the horsepower directed to the rear, the Strader family’s Ranger required substantial suspension modifications to manage it effectively. Kinetic Engineering calibrated the front Penske 7500 shocks, and they opted for extended ball joints to deliver about five inches of travel. This is evident when the truck launches; the front wheels momentarily lift, yet it maintains solid control throughout the run as the tires make contact with the pavement while the nose is raised high.

Overall, the truck tips the scales at approximately 3,000 pounds, complete with a carbon fiber front bumper.

The mighty Godzilla has no trouble propelling that weight down the strip with a Powerglide transmission paired with a Gear Vendors under/overdrive unit. Interestingly, as Strader noted in a video shared on the REVan Evan YouTube channel, it’s tuned to function as a four-speed. An electric Motion Raceworks shifter allows the truck to launch in low gear, after which it shifts into overdrive. Next, it transitions to high gear and disengages the overdrive. Finally, to achieve maximum speed, it re-engages the overdrive. This configuration works wonderfully for the present, although Ally is eager to switch it over to a manual setup.

This is one fierce truck, and for the time being, it’s quite unique. More individuals have swapped 302s into Rangers than I can count, but this probably ranks as one of the first Godzilla-powered instances I’ve observed. And given that the Strader family didn’t keep it stock, you can be sure it will reign as the toughest for quite some time.

Here’s the slip as evidence. Incredible! Ben Strader

### Installing a 511-Cubic-Inch Godzilla V8 Engine in a Ford Ranger for Enhanced Performance

#### Introduction
The Ford Ranger, celebrated for its versatility and durability, has gained popularity among enthusiasts aiming to boost performance. One of the most thrilling enhancements is installing the 511-cubic-inch Godzilla V8 engine. This powerhouse engine, originally engineered for larger Ford trucks and performance applications, can convert the Ranger into a high-performance vehicle. This article outlines the procedures, considerations, and advantages of this engine swap.

#### Understanding the Godzilla V8 Engine
The Godzilla V8, formally recognized as the Ford 7.3L V8, is a contemporary engine that provides remarkable power and torque. With a displacement of 511 cubic inches (approximately 8.4 liters), it delivers formidable performance, making it a perfect choice for those seeking to elevate their Ford Ranger’s capabilities. The engine incorporates advanced technology, including a DOHC design, variable valve timing, and direct fuel injection, which all contribute to its efficiency and power production.

#### Benefits of the Godzilla V8 Engine Swap
1. **Increased Power and Torque**: The Godzilla V8 engine can generate over 400 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque, greatly improving the Ranger’s performance.
2. **Improved Towing Capacity**: The extra torque enhances towing potential, allowing the Ranger to handle heavier loads.
3. **Enhanced Off-Road Performance**: The boost in power and torque allows for better acceleration and climbing ability, perfect for off-road escapades.
4. **Modern Technology**: The engine’s modern features enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions compared to older V8 engines.

#### Preparation for the Installation
Prior to commencing the installation, several preparatory steps are necessary:

1. **Research and Planning**: Assess the compatibility of the Godzilla V8 with the Ford Ranger. Investigate necessary modifications and collect insights from forums and experienced builders.
2. **Gather Necessary Parts**: Besides the engine, you’ll require a compatible transmission, engine mounts, wiring harness, and exhaust system. Consider upgrading the cooling system and fuel delivery components as well.
3. **Tools and Workspace**: Ensure you possess the appropriate tools, including an engine hoist, wrenches, sockets, and a complete set of automotive tools. A tidy, spacious work area is important for the installation process.

#### Installation Steps
1. **Remove the Existing Engine**: Disconnect the battery, drain fluids, and take out the current engine and transmission. Label all wires and hoses for effortless reinstallation.
2. **Prepare the Engine Bay**: Clean the engine bay and modify it as needed to fit the larger Godzilla V8. This might involve reinforcing the engine mounts and adjusting the firewall.
3. **Install the Godzilla V8 Engine**: Position the engine in the engine compartment using an engine hoist. Secure it to the new engine mounts and ensure correct alignment with the transmission.
4. **Connect the Transmission**: Attach the transmission to the engine, ensuring all bolts are tightened to manufacturer specifications.
5. **Wiring and Plumbing**: Connect the wiring harness, ensuring all sensors and components are accurately linked. Install the fuel lines, cooling system, and exhaust system.
