2027 Nissan Rogue Hybrid is set to debut as the Japanese automaker initiates its resurgence strategy. This includes alterations in design and philosophy.
In an exclusive conversation with The Drive, the Senior Vice President and Chief Planning Officer for Nissan North America, Ponz Pandikuthira, indicated that the brand has moved away from piano black trim and chrome as well.
Commenting on the absence of glossy piano-black trim in the 2027 Rogue Hybrid, Pandikuthira stated, “It’s definitely driven by consumers. It appears very premium when it’s brand new and shiny. But once it encounters real-world use, the fingerprints and such accumulate, leading to obsessive cleaning or giving up, resulting in it looking terrible after a while.”
Pandikuthira is correct. For many years, car manufacturers have opted for piano black plastic trim in vehicles to elevate their perceived luxury, but the harsh reality of ownership reveals its cheapness mere minutes in.
The redesigned Rogue does not feature a chrome grille or chrome trim, a deliberate choice per Pandikuthira. “The resurgence of chrome on the exterior began when we started coating plastic with chrome, but it became excessive and lost its sophisticated element. We can explore many options with dark chrome and subtle paint finishes. We’re even considering wrap-style treatments in the future that will provide more understated design cues than the overtly large chrome grille or substantial chrome elements on the wheels. The core design message here is subtlety over being ostentatious,” Pandikuthira shared.
While no one anticipated chrome to feature in the new Xterra, it’s comforting to hear that the shiny piano black trim is being phased out, at least for Nissan. It’s a positive beginning.
