The primary audience for the complete report includes OEMs and automotive suppliers. JD Power compiles an extensive amount of data regarding repairs on new vehicles, arranging it so that the manufacturers can identify what functions well and what does not. The 2026 U.S. Multimedia Quality and Satisfaction Study, a subdivision of the broader CQR portfolio, is “founded on responses from 78,514 buyers and lessees of new 2026 model-year vehicles surveyed following 90 days of ownership.”

The concrete evidence that screens are failing to deliver on the promise of simplifying driving is clear: “Multimedia-related issues have remained relatively stable year over year at 42.4 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), leading to multimedia’s share of total vehicle problems increasing to 25%, comprising the five most frequently reported vehicle issues.”

The key insight JD Power’s analysts are observing is that while the overall quality of vehicles is witnessing improvement, infotainment lags behind.

Part of this may relate to customers’ ever-growing expectations regarding what functionalities their vehicle’s screen should offer—there’s always a degree of subjectivity in analyses like this. However, I find it remarkably surprising that automakers, some of the largest companies globally, still appear to grapple with software.

As both a car enthusiast and a consumer, it’s incredibly frustrating. In my view, the ideal automotive interface is a red/blue knob for climate control and a smartphone mount for navigation. I won’t insist that everyone should agree with this, but as someone who tests numerous new cars each year, I strongly believe that large screens solve nothing; if anything, they introduce problems that shouldn’t exist.

During recent week-long evaluations of both the GMC Sierra EV and Hummer EV (which I generally liked), I frequently encountered a “distracted driver” alert while attempting to perform simple tasks on the main screen. According to the vehicles’ own logic, their infotainment was not safe to use while moving. Another particularly annoying instance of excessive screen use is the BMW M5 Touring—receiving a phone call in that vehicle transforms the cinema-sized display into a sea of black pixels just to center-screen your caller’s phone number.

Currently, my most disliked screen experience has to be attributed to Toyota. The primary display in high-end Toyota trucks is so expansive that you literally have to lean over it to see the road. Additionally, when switching drive modes in anything from a Camry to a Tacoma, the gauge cluster forces you to endure a seven-second (I clocked it) animation.

Apologies for the rant. The true source of my frustration is the realization that the companies producing these systems don’t care how clunky and unsafe they are. Screen-based controls and displays are far cheaper to manufacture than mechanical knobs. Therefore, that’s what we can expect to keep receiving.
