It’s widely acknowledged that seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has a strong affection for the Ferrari F40. So much so that during his inaugural official photoshoot as a Scuderia Ferrari driver, he was photographed alongside one. Recently, he garnered attention for taking over the streets of Tokyo in another F40, producing a full video montage of his late-night escapades with his partner, Kim Kardashian. Today, he shared on Instagram that he made an incredible discovery: his own Ferrari F40.
Hamilton didn’t specify exactly when he uncovered the vehicle, but he mentioned that it was encrusted with dust after being stored in a garage “for more than 30 years.”
“My very own F40. This is the car of my dreams and has been for as long as I can recall,” Hamilton remarked on Instagram. “As a child, I fantasized about owning one. When I joined Ferrari last year, I made it a point to have one with me on my first day at Maranello. It holds immense significance for me.
“These machines are masterpieces and exceedingly rare, so when I discovered this one, shrouded in dust after being hidden in a garage for more than thirty years, I realized I had to bring her home. First to Maranello, where the expert engineers and technicians at the factory toiled for weeks to restore her to her former glory,” he added. “A massive thank you to everyone involved in this endeavor. This has genuinely been a dream realized. I can’t wait to share more with all of you. Stay tuned …”
I’m unsure of the likelihood that Hamilton happened to be jogging through an unfamiliar town when he chanced upon the slightly ajar door of a garage and spotted the F40 tucked away inside, or perhaps he was jogging through the wilds when he noticed a barn and ventured in, only to uncover his dream car concealed beneath a mountain of debris; I simply don’t have the answer. It’s likely he had a scout from Maranello ready to pursue any lead regarding an untouched F40 available for sale, and this just happened to be the case. Maybe Hamilton will eventually share the full story—I hope so.
Regardless, it’s fantastic to see Lewis genuinely thrilled about his latest acquisition, and to see the Rosso Corsa supercar now in the process of being rejuvenated through Ferrari’s Classiche program. I particularly enjoy the images of Hamilton next to the car or the engine, almost as though he is a proud parent with a newborn.
As we’ve mentioned previously, there was a time when Hamilton decided to relinquish his car collection and even sold his private jet to minimize his carbon footprint. However, that seemed to shift around the period he transitioned from Mercedes to Ferrari, and now it appears he’s enjoying himself however he sees fit. Both decisions are commendable in their own ways, so kudos to him.
Given how he wrapped up his Instagram post: “Stay tuned…” I’m quite certain we have not heard the last of this initiative. I’m eagerly anticipating more.
