Tom Cruise Reveals Follow-Up to 'Days of Thunder' Scheduled for Summer 2028 Debut

It’s official, it’s happening.

On Saturday, Tom Cruise shared on Instagram that Days of Thunder will be making a comeback with a sequel scheduled for summer 2028. The announcement featured Anne Hathaway, who is set to join the cast of this revived cult classic.

Production for the new Days of Thunder has yet to begin. Cruise and Hathaway joked in their announcement that they’ll start filming after Hathaway welcomes her baby. Hathaway is expecting her third child.

The title of the Days of Thunder sequel remains ambiguous. The NASCAR vehicle featured in the announcement simply displayed Days of Thunder with “Summer 2028” inscribed on the side, adorned in the iconic paint scheme from the original film. Cole Trickle’s name appeared above the door, referring to the character Tom Cruise portrayed in the original.

In July, it was reported that Cruise had committed to the sequel alongside Paramount. The production company was reportedly looking for a director for the follow-up film. The original Days of Thunder was helmed by Tony Scott, who passed away in 2012.

Robert Duvall also appeared in the original film, but the legendary actor died in February. However, Randy Quaid, the actor who played Tim Daland, a car dealer aiming to establish a NASCAR racing team, is still alive and currently 75 years old.

In 2025, NASCAR icon Jeff Gordon expressed interest in participating in the new Days of Thunder sequel, prior to the film or Cruise’s involvement being confirmed.

Following the success of Top Gun: Maverick, Cruise expressed his desire to revive Days of Thunder and provide it with similar treatment. The original Days of Thunder was released after Cruise starred in the original Top Gun.
