Looking to switch the tires on your off-road daily driver? That task is much simpler than it was a few years back. Nowadays, nearly every tire manufacturer offers some version of “on-road all-terrain” designed to combine everyday comfort with impressive off-road capabilities. At BFG, that product line is the Trail-Terrain T/A—and now there’s an updated version, signified by a simple “+” at the end of the title: BFGoodrich Trail-Terrain T/A+.

BFGoodrich Trail-Terrain T/A+: Overview
While the KO lineage appeals to purists, the T/A+ is tailored for the weekend adventurer. This tire is specifically designed for drivers needing a substantial amount of off-road capability in an otherwise daily use vehicle. If you’re simply in search of a highway tire, the T/A+ offers more capability than necessary. If your driveway turns into a rally stage for a good part of the year, then this category is fitting for you.
Positioned beneath the KO2/KO3, the BFGoodrich Trail-Terrain T/A+ earned its “+” due to advancements in three main areas, as stated by BFG: all-weather traction, durability, and fuel efficiency. Two of these (traction and fuel efficiency) can be assessed within a review context. Long-term durability is outside the parameter of what I can reasonably evaluate within a short timeframe.
I am particularly keen on testing the Trail-Terrain’s traction in wet conditions. Being an all-terrain tire, it doesn’t feature the distinct circumferential grooves that aid road tires in effectively shedding water. This unique, zigzag tread design excels on rocky surfaces, but may not be the optimal setup for a rainy day.

The Cost
If you associate BFG with the higher end of the off-road market, you likely won’t be surprised that the T/A+ isn’t exactly budget-friendly. For the standard fitment in my Wrangler (255/75R/17), these are priced around $315 each at the time of writing; in the size we are currently testing (265/70R/17), they’re approximately $15 less.
These “replaced” a set of Nokian Outpost ATs (now succeeded by the nAT; same tire, different name) that cost about $30 less per tire for the equivalent size.
The Visual Appeal
The Trail-Terrain T/A+ is marketed as a white-letter tire, but that applies only to one side. The symmetrical/nondirectional tread design allows for flexible mounting. I chose to mount it with the white side out for fun, and it pairs reasonably well with the aftermarket OEM steel wheels. The shop was very apologetic for not being able to remove all of the blue dye, but I’m not overly concerned.
Beyond the letter choices, the T/A+ boasts a bold, rugged appearance. The wide rubber lends an aggressive stance to my factory-height JK, making it seem more stable compared to the less robust factory 16s and fuel-efficient tires.
The Initial 500 Miles
You only get one chance to create a first impression, and BFG truly excelled with the new T/A+. Even with their substantial size and weight, the sturdy BFGs deliver a wonderful ride. They absorb sharp impacts without struggling over gentler ones. However, there are two drawbacks. First, the absence of impact feedback results in a similar reduction in road feel. Secondly (partially due to the first factor), they can feel a bit restless and unclear in deep water, and the significant width of this particular fitment intensifies this issue.
It’s challenging to assess how these wider tires impact fuel economy with so few miles logged so far—after all, we are dealing with a Wrangler. Average fuel economy is simply part of the package, but it’s something I’ll be monitoring during upcoming refuels, as I expect the trend to be clear over the long term.
The Relaxed Drive
In urban settings, the T/A+’s smooth road manners yield excellent benefits. Even with the Wrangler’s roof down, there’s virtually no noise, and the robust sidewalls effectively cushion bumps. This is the most comfortable tire I have ever used on the Jeep, far exceeding the original-equipment Goodyears.
While I haven’t driven enough to provide solid statistical data, the added weight compared to the 16s I removed is palpable. Acceleration is noticeably slower with these heavier tires, and my clutch craves less un-sprung weight, but the enhancement in ride quality is worth it for daily driving.
The Off-Road Experience
I have only lightly used these tires, so we are still waiting for our first genuine off-road test. Stay tuned for some dedicated off-road feedback.
The Wet Weather Factor
BFG delivered these tires to me after the final frost had melted away, but I will be testing them throughout the winter months due to their superior handling in snow and ice. That’s the advantage of all-season truck tires—you can often find them with an official Three-Peak Mountain rating. Sometimes, driving a “big” truck indeed has its benefits.
The Trail-Terrain T/A+’s on-road behavior hasn’t escaped my wife’s notice, who remarked on how much smoother the ride has become compared to the Nokians. It’s difficult to make a direct comparison given the additional sidewall and mass of the BFGs, but the improvement is definitely appreciated.
