Ideally, General Motors would have continued producing the Chevrolet Bolt over the past two years and into the future. However, for a range of tedious, disheartening, and cynical reasons, which we won’t elaborate on here, the compact, entry-level EV is assured to return for only a single model year, with manufacturing expected to conclude midway through 2027. This isn’t an entirely new Bolt, but rather a significantly updated iteration of the Bolt EUV that briefly left us after 2023; the even smaller, non-EUV variant is no longer available.

Considering the resemblances between a lightly used Bolt and the new version, I found it valuable to make a comparison. My dear friend Forrest loaned me the keys to his 2023 Bolt EUV, which I drove consecutively with this nearly base model that I received for review a couple of weeks prior.

What I discovered was that while the new Bolt does possess some benefits over its predecessor, it also entails several irritating compromises that prevent it from being the clear choice. In fact, to possibly spoil the conclusion here, I would assert that if I already owned an older Bolt, I wouldn’t automatically feel compelled to upgrade.

The Essentials

Let’s start with what the new Bolt introduces compared to its predecessor. While its battery maintains the same 65 kWh rating as before, the new CATL-designed pack utilizes lithium-iron-phosphate technology, contrasting with the previous nickel-cobalt construction. The advantage is that the LFP battery should endure significantly more charge cycles; however, the downside is poorer cold-weather performance (theoretically—I couldn’t assess this in July, unfortunately) and increased weight. For a vehicle like the Bolt, the last point is not overly concerning for me.

The 2027 model also comes with a NACS port and can DC fast-charge at up to 150 kW, a threefold increase compared to its predecessor. The combination of significantly enhanced charging speed and the widespread availability of the port on this side of the ocean is, frankly, the greatest advantage the revitalized Bolt has to offer.

This doesn’t translate to a substantial range improvement, which is EPA-estimated at 262 miles on a complete charge—roughly 15 miles more than before. Moreover, while the new Bolt has gained 10 horsepower over its predecessor, bringing it to 210 hp, torque has inexplicably dropped from 266 lb-ft to just 169 lb-ft. Thankfully, this isn’t as detrimental in practice as it appears on paper, because GM engineers adjusted the final drive ratio to complement the vehicle’s smaller, higher-RPM motor. Consequently, in A/B testing of acceleration in both Bolts, the new model actually feels considerably quicker, even though raw numbers might indicate otherwise.

One additional note: The new Bolt facilitates bidirectional charging, allowing it to power your home, but only if you’re a GM Energy customer; there is no 120-volt outlet located in the trunk, for example.

Driving Two Bolts Back-to-Back

I must mention that my friend Forrest genuinely enjoys his Bolt, and I can see why. Whether you opt for an older used model or a brand new one, it serves as a fantastic short-trip vehicle. Both offer outstanding visibility in the cabin, smooth steering, and accelerator pedals designed to prevent sudden torque delivery upon initial press, which can be startling in EVs.

The difference between the two vehicles starts to become apparent in the powertrain, as I mentioned earlier, along with ride quality and braking. Neither car is particularly quick, yet the 2027 model certainly feels more agile off the line and during overtaking maneuvers, despite the significantly reduced torque figure. The gearing adjustment makes a substantial difference.

The new Bolt also features an updated rear twist beam, but I preferred the ride quality in Forrest’s vehicle, and for good reason: he upgraded the shocks. As a result, his Bolt feels less jarring and bumpy over uneven surfaces, although I wouldn’t label the stock experience of the new model as terrible. After all, we’re discussing an economical vehicle.

However, what I missed the most in the new Bolt was the previous model’s one-pedal driving feature. The “normal” regen setting is dreadful in the new model, effectively engaging the brakes anytime you’re off the throttle. Inexplicably, there is a “high” setting for those preferring an even more awkward driving experience, but no gentler option. Forrest’s Bolt felt entirely different; there, the regen was smoother and just right, and I would happily operate that vehicle in one-pedal mode with zero complaints. The new calibration is simply unacceptable, and I had to deactivate it right away.

Ironically, when The Drive’s Kyle Cheromcha drove the 2027 Bolt for its initial review earlier this year, GM engineers informed him they had not yet figured out how to effectively blend friction and regen braking through the pedal during the older Bolt’s development. This is why the former model featured the Regen-on-Demand paddle behind the steering wheel, which is absent in the new version.

Interior and Technology Comparison

GM made far more updates to the Bolt’s interior than one might expect after a two-year hiatus, though I’m uncertain if all of it was for the better. The first thing that struck me upon entering the new vehicle was the plethora of cubbies and compartments, storage spaces that were lacking in the previous Bolt. They appear convenient at first glance, until you realize that many of them possess awkward shapes or are lined with overly slick materials that prevent them from retaining items securely.

Consider the tray located just below the center stack, for example. If you opt for the extra cost, this can function as a wireless charger for your smartphone. My vehicle didn’t include that feature, but I would have liked to be able to leave my phone there. Unfortunately, GM didn’t invest the minimal amount required to make the surface of this shelf grippy in any way, so I opted against it. Conversely, I appreciate the new Bolt’s design for front cupholders, which feature adjustable dividers for a customizable fit.

Overall, however, I significantly preferred the cabin of the older Bolt. I favored its traditional shifter compared to the new vehicle’s stalk. I valued its hardware power button (imagine that!) exactly where you would expect it. I appreciated its dedicated drive mode button and, in general, how much more substantial and inviting it felt, with fewer hard plastics and a greater proportion of soft-touch materials. Forrest’s Bolt is a higher-spec variant than the 2027 model I drove, to be sure, but entering a new base Bolt makes it feel like you’re stepping into a tiny utility van.

And, at the risk of sounding like a broken record from previous GM reviews, I genuinely missed CarPlay in the new Bolt. There is simply no justification for not having it. Supporters argue that as more mainstream apps, like Spotify and Apple Music, are integrated into the vehicle, phone projection becomes less crucial. The issue is that vehicles will never encompass everything, and if I wish to switch between music streaming and, say, my preferred podcast app, Overcast, I must retrieve my phone while driving, which is unsafe and illegal. [Ed. note: and exceedingly annoying.]

The tech and automotive industries resolved this issue long ago, yet some manufacturers prefer that you remain in their ecosystem, with their oddly small software buttons and perplexing icons that rarely seem to convey what you expect them to. Enough is enough, and I wish GM would just adopt a more reasonable approach.

Pricing and Final Thoughts

When my former colleague Peter Holderith reviewed the Bolt EUV back in 2022, it had a starting price of $28,195 delivered. (Back then, you could also take advantage of a $7,500 tax credit, of course, but we won’t hold that against the new vehicle.) For 2027, the Bolt starts at $28,995. The only additional feature my vehicle had was a $995 Comfort Package, which included heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

I appreciate the very minimal price elevation, but, naturally, you will not find any new 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUVs at MSRP. Thus, we turn to the used market, where a brief search in my locale reveals one well-equipped model with 23,000 miles for $24,700, alongside a similarly used LT for $21,500.

Ultimately, there’s precisely one aspect of the newer Bolt that might make it somewhat difficult to choose otherwise: its integrated NACS port and capability for 150-kW rapid charging. Even with that, I think I would save the money and opt for a used one.

The Bolt is a vehicle that people were eager to see return, so I’m pleased it is. It’s hard to argue against it as a sensibly packaged, affordable EV, and I hope buyers will appreciate this new version as much as existing owners have cherished theirs. Regrettably, every step in this car’s revival has felt like something GM was compelled to do, something it never truly embraced. I can’t shake the feeling that a part of that is reflected in the end product.
