The fifth generation of the Toyota Supra has come and gone, with no direct successor anticipated for the near future. It feels somewhat odd to mention this, as Caleb highlighted a few months back, it really doesn’t seem like the vehicle was around for that long.
We had a conversation with Alex Shen, Chief Designer at Calty Design. Calty is Toyota’s design studio located in California, and it was responsible for (among many other projects) the concept car that ultimately became the MkV Supra, which helped to clarify the gap between concepts and their contemporary production counterparts. In doing so, he provided insights into how modern consumer preferences are shaping new design directions.
Calty engages in extensive exploratory design work. Given this mission, it’s expected that their concepts will challenge norms—often exceeding what is realizable in production. The team creates numerous “early studies”—ambiguous designs meant to suggest stylistic aspects and not necessarily reflective of any end product.
“We’re an advanced design studio, so a lot of our output is not really aimed at public consumption,” Shen stated. “Maybe those concepts aren’t fully developed yet, or still somewhat in progress.”
Of course, not every design that the studio generates will be chosen by the company, let alone manufactured. So when a design makes it through the entire process, like the Toyota FT-1 eventually becoming the new Supra, it often leads to reflection.
“Time ultimately reveals the quality of the product you designed,” Shen mentioned.
Each year, Calty designers select a project they wish to delve into. The Supra (which didn’t have its name at the time) was one such choice, and the team figured that the best approach to pitch a new design would be to allow the executives to actually experience it.
At that time, Shen explained, sports cars were regarded as financial liabilities. He never thought this would likely gain approval, as Toyota wasn’t facing the typical appeal challenges that might cause an automaker to take a risk on something thrilling.
“We hadn’t received any word about, you know, any future production plans,” he remarked. “We already had a pretty strong image at that moment.”
“What maintained its identity as a Supra was essentially the spirit of its purpose, right? Version by version, it evolved from something like a Celica Supra to a genuine sports car,” Shen stated.
Naturally, this made the team ponder a rather obvious question: “What should come next?”
The outcome was the FT-1. However, considering the challenges facing the segment, looks alone wouldn’t convince the executives. Calty opted to adopt a more comprehensive strategy.
“You’re meant to drive these sports cars. It should be an emotional experience,” Shen expressed. “It’s not sufficient just to release a car, right?”
There was just one issue. At that particular time, Calty didn’t possess anything remotely resembling an actual vehicle to showcase; all they had was a design. This is where Polyphony Digital became involved.
“So we integrated it into the system. We placed it in Gran Turismo,” Shen shared.
After just a few laps in the digital FT-1, Akio-san was convinced. Word arrived almost instantly from Calty leadership that the team was authorized to create a show car—something that automakers are increasingly reluctant to undertake these days—and no one had even approached the idea of approving production yet.
The shared platform with BMW and all the intricacies that would involve hadn’t even entered Calty’s team considerations. They’d need to align their design with both the physical limits of the shared hardware and the financial limitations of a project that—perhaps not outright—really wasn’t expected to generate any profit.
