The Jensen Interceptor was an elongated and low-slung British touring vehicle in the 1950s. However, most of you likely recall its quirky shooting-brake style from the ’60s and ’70s, if it rings any bells at all. Early this year, a revival of the Jensen Interceptor was declared. As of today, it appears to have made strides, with plans to unveil its design as an analog (yay!), V8 (yay!), track-exclusive (boo.) model.

Here are the essential details on what’s being referred to as the “Jensen Interceptor GTX” from the press release:

“Created as an upgraded prototype, the Interceptor GTX will lay the groundwork for multiple future Interceptor variants, comprising roadworthy models and track-oriented cars.”

This GTX version has reportedly been conceived, engineered, and hand-assembled in the UK. The number of units available and their pricing is still to be determined.

If you’re following this topic with a sense of bewilderment, well, so am I. The original Interceptors were all GTs, not sports cars. The design that the brand has been revealing certainly seems more “touring” than “raw performance.” A track model doesn’t seem entirely justifiable. That is, until you consider the regulatory elements. Creating a track car avoids many of the toughest aspects of car production—such as compliance with safety, emissions, and other standards for road cars.

So, while I’m sure the individuals marketing it would never present it this way, I believe the sole reason for a “track-only” Interceptor to exist is so the company can release something, anything, into the market.

I don’t intend to throw shade at these folks, though—it would be fantastic if Jensen could genuinely produce a limited-run V8, manual, touring car, even in modest numbers. The teaser silhouettes it has released thus far actually look impressive. And while an old Interceptor wouldn’t be the most sensible base for building a track car, Jensen’s new leadership insists that this is not a revival of the classic Interceptor.

Count me as officially wishing them the best.
