Throughout the previous year, iRacing Studios has been diligently working on a specialized IndyCar game, the first of its kind since the mid-2000s. The journey towards a new IndyCar title has been tumultuous, as the rights for the American open-wheel racing series were initially held by Motorsport Games for a while, resulting in an agreement that ultimately yielded no output, before IndyCar shifted to iRacing.
We hadn’t received updates on the game for months, but on Friday, news arrived stating its release is set for early 2027, along with a couple of screenshots.
The game, officially titled IndyCar Racing: The Game (somewhat redundant, but sure), is set to be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC via Steam next year. When announced nearly a year ago, iRacing indicated that the game would harness its exclusive Orontes engine, distinct from the middleware utilized for iRacing’s main simulator or Unreal Engine. Orontes is the same technology that powers the publisher’s futuristic racing title ExoCross, which impressively combines sophistication and high performance despite its more imaginative approach.
Initially, the IndyCar game was slated for a 2026 release, but with nearly all software in development facing delays of several months—and considering that iRacing seemed to be aiming for a swift turnaround—it’s not surprising to see it pushed to 2027.
Nonetheless, this is definitely something we are looking forward to. IndyCar supporters know it currently represents some of the finest racing available, and American open-wheel motorsport has seldom received the recognition in the interactive space that it truly deserves.
