The LS6 provides 40 hp more than the previous 6.2-liter LT2, which Team Corvette attributes to the Stingray’s enhanced capacity to reach another 6 mph and achieve 200.
“That’s all about power. The record truly highlights the prowess of the LS6, an engine we aimed to establish a distinct place for within the Corvette range,” said Small Block Assistant Chief Engineer Mike Kociba in a GM News blog.
However, this doesn’t imply that 200 mph is the standard for all C8 Corvettes, because once you consider the Z06, you’re venturing into the realm of widebody cars with enhanced aerodynamics. And aerodynamics, of course, are the natural adversary of straight-line speed. The Z06 is officially recorded to have a top speed of 195 mph, while the ZR1 can easily reach around 233 mph with its power exceeding 1,000.
It’s also important to mention that a Stingray fitted with the optional Z51 Performance Package, which the car in GM’s recent test lacked, would likely have a lower top speed due to gearing modifications and additional front and rear spoilers.
All this gives the Stingray a cool distinction at the entry level. Sure, it might not excel on the track, but it can outrun its siblings, provided there’s enough distance. And for $73,500, no less. I wouldn’t label it the deal of the century, but it is a reasonable price, especially when the average new vehicle costs $22,000 less than that.
