This week, Maserati unveiled what will be the foundation of its 2027 model range. Newly refreshed with updated grilles and paint, the renovated GranTurismo, GranCabrio, and Grecale embody the brand’s primary focus, so to speak. Maserati hopes to rely on them to sustain the Italian luxury automaker in the immediate future. But what lies ahead?

In a Q&A session following the reveal of these refreshed models, Maserati executives addressed inquiries not only about the two- and four-door vehicles presented but also about Maserati’s future—a future that likely includes V8 power and a redesigned sedan.

“We possess one of the finest—if not the finest—V6s globally,” Maserati Chief Operating Officer Santo Ficili stated.

Ficili mentioned that the team’s short-term objective is to maximize the potential of that six-cylinder engine. However, he acknowledged that certain market segments will not accept smaller engines, especially among high-end luxury buyers.

“Naturally, we are also contemplating the V8,” Ficili added.

Engineering chief Davide Danesin supported Ficili’s viewpoint, highlighting the versatility of the V6 while also recognizing the rationale for keeping a V8 option available.

“We possess the expertise; we have the potential,” Danesin affirmed.

At this stage, even without a V8 officially planned, it’s more probable to materialize than a plug-in hybrid. The company is actively investigating ways to expand its 48-volt mild hybrid system, which is expected to slowly integrate across its offerings. Full hybrid systems are also being considered, according to Danesin. However, PHEVs? Don’t count on it.

Danesin pointed out that Maserati has access to all three tiers of hybrid technology within the company’s wider “technological portfolio,” but downplayed the perception of a plug-in hybrid aligning with its sales objectives, citing both weight concerns and the reality that many consumers do not charge them, rendering the batteries superfluous (and cumbersome).

Maserati’s legendary sedan is currently on an indefinite break. It was set to be succeeded by an electric model. However, both Ficili and Cristiano Fiorio, the brand’s chief marketer, are optimistic about the future of four-door vehicles at the brand.

“Absolutely yes,” Fiorio confirmed. “I believe that the sedan will return.”

Fiorio indicated that Gen Z and Gen Alpha are both categorically considered “retro-seeking” buyers. They are beginning to turn away from the oversized and overly digitized cars that have gained traction in recent decades. “The market is saturated with SUVs,” he remarked.

While Grecale assists Maserati in filling the gap left by the Quattroporte, the brand acknowledges that there are consumers seeking a genuine executive sedan. Fiorio believes there is potential for a new entry, but the concept of a sedan itself may need to adapt to contemporary trends.

“Quattroporte is seeking something innovative,” he stated.
