Dinner made easy! Crunchy, sticky, stunning bang bang tofu stacked on top of hot rice. Super simple and absolutely delicious!
The Irresistibly Delicious Tofu That Amazed My Friends and Me.
I whipped this up on a whim for a sudden casual dinner gathering, and my friends messaged the following day requesting the recipe.
It was SO flavorful.
I wanted something incredibly simple that would pack a punch (I’m getting déjà vu). So, I brainstormed and decided to center the dish around an all-time EASY crowd favorite: classic bang bang sauce.
This sauce is ridiculously simple and surprisingly tasty.
- Mayonnaise
- Sweet chili sauce
- Soy sauce
- Fresh garlic
Here’s the trick: air fry the tofu (quickest way to achieve ultimate crispiness) and then move it to a skillet with some of the sauce for a sticky, caramelized texture reminiscent of restaurant fare.
Once the tofu appears golden and appetizing, serve it over rice alongside green beans (I also added some udon noodle stir-fry from Costco) and go wild with the extra sauce. The creaminess? The sweet heat combined with umami? The fresh garlic kick?! Seriously.
I’m not claiming this will win over every child, but anecdotally, my daughters really enjoy this dish! And the middle schoolers at our dinner were all raving about it.
Hope you enjoy!

Instructions
- Prepare Tofu: Tear the tofu into rough, bite-sized pieces using your hands.
- Coat Tofu: Mix the tofu pieces with cornstarch, garlic powder, paprika, and salt (I find it easiest to use my hands). Then, toss again with soy sauce and oil to coat.
- Air Fry Tofu: Air fry the tofu at 350 for 10 minutes. Shake or stir and air fry for an additional 5 minutes at 375, or until crispy and golden.
- Prepare Sauce: Whisk together the sauce ingredients.
- Coat Tofu with Sauce: Move the crispy tofu to a skillet over medium-high heat. Add ¼ cup of sauce and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until the tofu is coated and caramelized. The sauce will turn into a glaze-like texture on the tofu. If desired, you can repeat this step to enhance the flavor.
- Serve: The tofu should already be sticky and mouthwatering. Serve it over rice, and drizzle or dollop the leftover sauce on top of the tofu (adding a tablespoon or two of water to the sauce can help thin it out, if you prefer). Garnish with sesame seeds or green onions! I always serve this with green beans. DELICIOUS.
Notes
From my experience, the high protein tofu from Trader Joe’s doesn’t require pressing (!!) which is why I love it! It comes out of the package quite dry to begin with – I just pat the outside dry. However, if you’re using another brand or type of tofu, wrap it in a clean towel and press it multiple times to remove excess moisture.

Additional Tofu Recipes I’m Passionate About
**Title: The Craft of Creating a Spicy Crispy Tofu Meal**
Tofu, a flexible and protein-packed essential in various cuisines, has experienced worldwide acclaim for its propensity to absorb flavors and its versatility in different recipes. Among the numerous methods to cook tofu, the spicy crispy tofu meal is noteworthy for its enjoyable mix of textures and robust flavors. This dish not only pleases the palate but also exemplifies the culinary innovation that tofu encourages.
**The Base: Tofu**
The path to a perfect spicy crispy tofu meal starts with picking the right tofu. Firm or extra-firm tofu works best for this dish as it maintains its shape well during cooking and provides a satisfying texture. It’s crucial to press the tofu before cooking to remove excess moisture. This step ensures that the tofu turns crispy when fried instead of being soggy.
**The Marinade: Infusing Taste**
A thoughtfully prepared marinade is essential for imparting flavor to the tofu. Typical components of a spicy marinade include soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, and a dash of sugar for balance. You can add heat through chili paste, sriracha, or crushed red pepper flakes. Let the tofu marinate for at least 30 minutes, or overnight for a deeper flavor.
**The Coating: Creating Crispiness**
To reach the desired crunchy texture, coat the marinated tofu in a blend of cornstarch and flour. This coating aids in forming a crunchy outer layer while sealing in the flavors from the marinade. For an extra burst of flavor, season the coating with salt, pepper, and a sprinkle of cayenne.
**The Cooking: Mastering the Crunch**
Frying proves to be the most effective technique for achieving a crispy exterior. Heat a generous amount of oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, carefully place the coated tofu pieces, ensuring to not crowd the pan. Fry until golden brown and crispy on each side, then transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to absorb excess oil.
**The Sauce: Adding Heat and Depth**
A spicy sauce serves as the finishing touch for this meal. You can concoct a simple yet flavorful sauce by blending soy sauce, rice vinegar, honey, and chili paste. For additional depth, mix in minced garlic and ginger. Heat the sauce until it thickens slightly, then incorporate the crispy tofu, ensuring every piece is thoroughly coated.
**The Garnish: Unifying the Dish**
Garnishing offers the final touch, enhancing both the visual appeal and flavor of the meal. Freshly chopped scallions, sesame seeds, and a sprinkle of cilantro can elevate the dish, adding a refreshing note and a hint of nuttiness. For an extra kick, you might consider adding a few slices of fresh chili.
**Serving Suggestions**
Spicy crispy tofu can function as an appetizer, a main course, or even be part of a bigger meal. Pair it with steamed rice or noodles to soften the heat, or serve alongside a crisp salad for a refreshing contrast. This dish is not just a treat for the senses, but also highlights the versatility and delicious potential of tofu.
In summary, the spicy crispy tofu meal is a harmonious blend of flavors and textures, providing a delightful culinary journey. Whether you’re a tofu lover or a novice, this meal promises to impress with its vibrant flavors and satisfying crunch.
