Interestingly, I visited Monaco not long ago. Not for the Formula 1 race, despite my desire to do so, but weeks prior for a friend’s wedding in the vicinity of the principality. There’s a surreal quality to experiencing it in person that I believe any motorsport enthusiast or racing game aficionado would appreciate, and it was certainly captivating to stroll around the track’s edge.
What I find particularly exciting about Clutch is that you’re not merely navigating the circuit itself, which we’ve digitally traversed countless times by now. You also get access to some of the adjacent roads, along with the liberty to veer off the designated route through side streets and into areas that were previously inaccessible.
That’s quite an exhilarating prospect. As a child, I remember playing games like Ridge Racer and envisioning where walled-off roads might lead; now, Clutch enables me to uncover those paths myself. That’s a unique experience made possible by an environment with which we all share some familiarity or connection, which is why Maverick’s selection of the French Riviera stands out as such an insightful choice.
The Initial CLUTCH Gameplay!!
Throughout the gameplay—which I’ve included YouTuber BlackPanthaa’s rendition of above—we notice some quieter, more leisurely moments, such as cruising in a BMW 507 through the city while the protagonist converses with a passenger. Many streets seem narrower than those in Forza Horizon 6‘s Tokyo and feature heavier traffic, contributing to a feeling of scale and vibrancy within the environment.
The vehicles featured are quite inspired—a 986 Porsche Boxster, the original Renault Twingo, E39 BMW M5, and so on. There’s street racing at night, historical circuit racing during daylight, and one specific segment where our hero has to steal a car from a penthouse apartment (featuring actual on-foot gameplay) while avoiding the police. Spoiler alert: They manage to accomplish the first part but struggle with the second.
It’s challenging to determine at this early juncture, with Clutch still a year from launch, if the game will truly fulfill its promises. However, as someone who has become weary of Forza Horizon’s unyielding adherence to a formula for financial success, I’m intrigued by Maverick’s ability to diverge from the norm. Clutch presents a rich narrative depth with characters that look impressive and have evidently received the care and focus necessary for prominence within a scene. Its car models are stunningly beautiful, seemingly surpassing Forza’s in realism, and we know they will also offer enhanced customization. Plus, it features Monaco. That’s sufficient to warrant attention.
