Porsche Creates Denim-Resembling Paint Influenced by Toy Story

Porsche’s Sonderwunsch or “Special Request” team embarks on some pretty exceptional projects, ranging from road-legal variants of Le Mans prototypes to extreme retro designs that never existed. Their latest undertaking consists of three vehicles, celebrating a partnership that started about two decades ago, when Pixar approached Porsche to obtain permission to depict Cars’ Sally Carrera as a 911. Toy Story 5 is set to premiere later this month, leading both parties to create three unique models, each capturing the essence of the series’ legendary characters with distinct variations of the 911.

The trio of cars—a 911 Carrera T representing Woody, 911 Carrera Targa 4 GTS embodying Jessie, and 911 GT3 RS capturing Buzz Lightyear—will be auctioned as part of a charitable effort supporting Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, the American Red Cross, and Starlight Children’s Foundation. Each one is as personalized as it gets, from a livery entirely hand-painted for Buzz’s GT3, to a special ribbon embroidery on the seats of Jessie’s Targa, to a groundbreaking finish process for the body of Woody’s Carrera T that resembles a pair of lived-in jeans.

There are features to appreciate all over these vehicles, but the denim blue finish on Woody’s 911 stands out. To achieve this look, Porsche employed a technique it has never utilized before, imprinting actual denim fabric into the car’s paint to authentically transfer the texture. This new method was established to honor Woody’s role as an old and cherished toy in the films, but Sonderwunsch’s Project Manager for Inspiration vehicles, Dominic Mayer, mentioned that clients in the future can now request a similar approach for their commissions, as Porsche has confirmed the technique.

“The fabric and denim appearance meets all industry standards—especially our own Porsche standards for materials,” Mayer stated during a roundtable discussion. “We conduct abrasive tests and similar evaluations with the fabric. Thus, this example of the fabric and denim look is something we can provide in the future for additional clients. When we develop [something like] this, we typically don’t do it for just one car because the costs become prohibitively high.”

The same applies to the new wheels that the Sonderwunsch team has designed for Woody and Jessie’s vehicles. Both feature a Fuchs-style, five-spoke design, but their center caps are stars that reflect the characters’ sheriff roles. Porsche has never created an entirely new wheel for a limited project like this before, but now that it has, it is open to similar requests in the future.

“They are completely a new geometry, a fully new wheel design, specifically crafted and produced for these two cars,” Mayer explained. “We didn’t provide this option before—or we don’t currently offer this—if a customer comes to us and requests a custom-designed and manufactured wheel, we will now consider it for the future.”

There seems to be a narrative behind every design choice made by Porsche and Pixar for these vehicles. The pearl white paint on Jessie’s Targa may seem ordinary in images, yet it nods to the pearl buttons on her shirt. However, this color was actually selected from Porsche’s past, originating from an unexpected source—the 1983 Porsche Gruppe B concept that predated the legendary 959. Meanwhile, every one of the ten colors showcased on Buzz’s GT3 comes directly from Porsche’s color library, and it is no wrap, as Porsche noted it required over 350 man-hours to paint the vehicle.

As you would imagine, there was extensive deliberation regarding which character to pair with which car—except for Buzz, where the decision was clear.

“There wasn’t much debate—it was just like, ‘That’s it,’” Bob Pauley, Pixar Production Designer and the original creator of Buzz Lightyear, remarked during the discussion. “Buzz Lightyear, when he appears in the scene, poses a significant threat to Woody because he is the coolest toy. So, we’re doing the car—what is the coolest one?”

The entire livery of Buzz’s GT3 RS (or “SR,” for “Space Ranger,” as Pixar has nicknamed it) is unbelievably detailed, with the most impressive part being that when viewed from behind, both doors open, allowing the candy-striping red-and-white wing pattern from his wings to extend seamlessly onto the vehicle. I must also highlight the small winglets on the hood vents, painted asymmetrically to correlate with the distinct buttons on his suit.

For those who grew up with these films, countless references can be found in these one-offs. Porsche and Pixar may appear as an unlikely pairing outside the realm of Cars, yet when representatives from both sides discuss it, the excitement they share becomes instantly evident.

“Porsche and Pixar both uphold a high level of excellence and meticulous detail, right? We place immense value on authenticity and the specifics of the vehicles, so there’s never a moment when we aren’t aligned on that,” Jay Ward, Pixar’s Creative Director of Franchise, stated. “We continuously aim for ‘What’s the right approach?’ Not, ‘Oh this is challenging, or ‘This is unfeasible,’ but rather, ‘What’s the best way to convey a story?’”

Porsche and Pixar will disclose the sale terms and the total funds raised for charity at a future date. Toy Story 5 will be released in theaters nationwide on June 19. And, who knows—you might just spot this trio as toy cars in the future.

**Porsche Unveils Denim-Inspired Paint Drawing from Toy Story**

Porsche, the esteemed German car manufacturer, has generated buzz with its pioneering approach to vehicle design by introducing a distinctive denim-inspired paint. This revolutionary coating takes cues from the cherished animated franchise, Toy Story, particularly its notable character, Woody, recognized for his denim clothing.

The innovative paint replicates the texture and appearance of denim fabric, providing a unique aesthetic that differentiates Porsche vehicles from typical automotive finishes. This creative layer not only elevates the visual allure of the cars but also aims to evoke feelings of nostalgia and whimsy, reminiscent of cherished childhood memories tied to Toy Story.

The creation of this paint involved intensive research and collaboration between Porsche’s design and engineering departments. The objective was to devise a finish that not only resembles denim but also possesses the robustness and durability necessary for automotive usage. The outcome is a paint that exhibits an exclusive texture, delivering the illusion of fabric while retaining the protective attributes of conventional automotive paint.

One remarkable feature of this denim-inspired coating is its capacity to alter appearance under varying lighting situations. Just as denim can look lighter or darker based on the light, this paint provides a dynamic visual experience, making each vehicle an exceptional piece of artistry. This attribute is especially appealing to younger consumers and individuals searching for customization options in their cars.

Porsche intends to introduce this groundbreaking paint option in limited-edition models, aiming to engage collectors and enthusiasts who value unique design features. The company seeks to leverage the increasing trend of personalization within the automotive sector, where consumers desire to express their uniqueness through their vehicles.

Alongside its aesthetic advantages, Porsche’s denim-like paint aligns with the brand’s commitment to environmental sustainability. The development process concentrated on utilizing eco-friendly materials and methods, ensuring that the new paint option conforms to Porsche’s ecological standards.

As the automotive landscape continues to progress, Porsche’s denim-like paint stands as evidence of the brand’s relentless pursuit of innovation and artistic expression. By drawing inspiration from popular culture, Porsche enhances its vehicle offerings and resonates with a wider audience, reminding us of the joy and creativity that cars can inspire.

This one-of-a-kind paint option is expected to generate considerable interest among aficionados of both Porsche and Toy Story, illustrating how the realms of automotive design and entertainment can merge in thrilling and unforeseen ways.
