Currently, a selection of EVs, including Rivians, feature Pet Mode, which allows the climate control system to operate while the vehicle is locked, keeping a pet comfortable in varying weather conditions. The next addition? Pet Cam, which is precisely what it sounds like.
The newly launched 2027 Rivian R2, now making its way to customers, includes the necessary hardware for this functionality. The software to implement Pet Mode, similar to the one in the R1, will be available in about a month. As for Pet Cam? The software to enable it is expected “this year,” confirmed Rivian’s Chief Software Officer, Wassym Bensaid, in an interview with The Drive.
Bensaid noted that priorities, such as getting the R2 into production, took precedence.
Pet Cam will utilize a new RGB camera concealed in the rearview mirror that monitors the interior. This camera also serves as the driver attention system during driving and when leveraging Rivian’s Universal Hands-Free driver-assist feature.
It’s important to mention that the more premium R1s, which are also available for purchase now, will not include Pet Cam—at least for the time being. The R1 models use an infrared camera instead of an RGB camera in the rearview mirror for driver monitoring, thus cannot be used for Pet Cam purposes.
Bensaid indicated that users will be able to utilize Pet Cam to view their pets and monitor their status via the Rivian app available on iOS or Android.
“That said, a multitude of controls will be in place because, obviously, as we engage the camera, we must be extremely [cautious]. It is crucial for us to comply with all privacy regulations. Thus, the feature activates exclusively when a pet is detected. If a human is present, the feature will remain off,” Bensaid explained.
He further elaborated, “As with all things, we provide customization options for the customer; you can review the specifics of our privacy practices. Users can expect that the internal camera is set to off by default. It’s opt-in. If one wishes to use it for Pet Cam, additional controls are in place, ensuring it only activates upon detecting a pet. The feature will not be enabled if a human is present.”
Pet Cam operates alongside Pet Mode, meaning activating Pet Mode does not automatically engage Pet Cam. The latter functions as an optional feature once the former is active. They can also be used semi-independently, allowing users to disable Pet Cam when not needed while still using Pet Mode.
Bensaid expressed the importance of ensuring protection against scenarios like domestic abuse, stating, “We want to ensure that if you’re not on amicable terms with your partner, we do not equip you with means to spy on them. Hence, it is paramount that the feature works only when a pet is detected.”
This will be enabled through various sensors, including image recognition, weight sensors, the camera’s awareness of its surroundings, and an opt-in agreement. An on-screen indicator will appear each time the camera activates while recording inside the vehicle.
In today’s world, where monitoring our kids and pets is possible from numerous devices, Rivians can now join the ranks. You will never again go long without checking on your furry friend.
