The Irresistibly Delicious Tofu That Impressed My Friends and Me.

I whipped this up spontaneously for a casual dinner gathering, and my friends messaged the following day asking for the recipe.

It was INCREDIBLE.

I wanted something super easy that would pack a punch in flavor (feeling a sense of déjà vu). I brainstormed, and I chose to focus the meal around a guaranteed hit that never fails: classic bang bang sauce.

This sauce is ridiculously simple and surprisingly delicious.

  • Mayonnaise
  • Sweet chili sauce
  • Soy sauce
  • Fresh garlic

Here’s the trick: air fry the tofu (the quickest method to achieve an ultra-crispy texture) and then transfer it to a skillet with some of the sauce so you can create that sticky, glazed finish reminiscent of dining out.

After the tofu has a beautiful golden color, serve it atop rice with green beans (you might throw in some of that udon stir-fry from Costco, like I did) and generously drizzle the leftover sauce over the tofu. The creaminess? The sweet kick with umami? The sharp garlic flavor?! Seriously amazing.

I can’t guarantee this will be adored by every child, but anecdotally, my kids really enjoy it! Plus, the middle schoolers at our gathering couldn’t stop raving about it.

Hope you enjoy!

Instructions

  1. Prep Tofu: Tear the tofu into irregular, bite-sized pieces using your hands.

  2. Coat Tofu: Mix the tofu pieces with cornstarch, garlic powder, paprika, and salt to coat (I find using my hands to be easiest). Toss with soy sauce and oil to coat afterwards.

  3. Air Fry Tofu: Air fry the tofu at 350 for 10 minutes. Shake or stir, then continue to air fry for another 5 minutes at 375, or until it’s crispy and golden.

  4. Make Sauce: Whisk the sauce ingredients together.

  5. Sauce Tofu: Transfer the crispy tofu to a skillet over medium-high heat. Add ¼ cup of sauce and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until the tofu is coated and caramelized. The sauce will turn into a glaze-like consistency on the tofu. You can repeat this a few times to enhance the flavor if desired.

  6. Serve: The tofu should be inherently sticky and scrumptious. Serve it over rice, drizzling or dolloping with the remaining sauce (you can thin the sauce with a tablespoon or two of water if preferred). Garnish with sesame seeds or green onions! I always pair this with green beans. DELICIOUS.

Notes

In my experience, the high-protein tofu from Trader Joe’s does not require pressing (!!) which is why it’s my favorite! It comes out of the package fairly dry to begin with – I just pat the outside dry. However, if you’re using a different brand or type of tofu, wrap it in a clean towel and press it several times to eliminate excess moisture.

Additional Tofu Recipes I Adore

**Title: Delving into the Flavors of a Spicy Crunchy Tofu Dish**

Tofu, an adaptable and protein-packed staple, has been central in numerous global cuisines. Among the countless methods to prepare tofu, the spicy crunchy tofu dish shines for its delightful melding of textures and tastes. This dish not only satisfies vegetarians and vegans but also delights anyone craving a delectable and filling meal.

**The Core of Tofu**

Tofu, or bean curd, originates from soybeans and is a well-liked source of plant-based protein. Its subtle flavor makes it a fantastic medium for absorbing various spices and seasonings. The secret to a successful tofu dish is in the preparation, especially in achieving the ideal texture.

**Attaining the Ultimate Crisp**

The defining characteristic of a spicy crunchy tofu dish is its texture. To achieve a crispy outside while keeping a tender inside, tofu must be pressed to remove any excess moisture. This can be accomplished by wrapping the tofu in a clean cloth and placing a weight on it for about 20-30 minutes. After pressing, cut the tofu into bite-sized cubes.

Next, coating the tofu in cornstarch or a mixture of cornstarch and flour prior to frying is crucial for obtaining that prized crispy texture. The tofu is then shallow-fried or deep-fried until it turns golden brown, generating a delightful crunch with every bite.

**The Spice Component**

The spicy aspect of the dish can be adjusted to personal preferences. Typical spices include chili powder, cayenne pepper, or fresh chilies. For a more intricate flavor profile, add a blend of garlic, ginger, soy sauce, and sesame oil. These components not only amplify the heat but also enrich the overall umami essence of the dish.

**Sauce and Finishing Touches**

A thoughtfully crafted sauce can take the spicy crunchy tofu dish to new levels. A straightforward yet potent sauce can be made by mixing soy sauce, rice vinegar, a dash of sugar, and chili paste. This sauce can be drizzled over the tofu or served as a side dipping sauce.

Garnishes like chopped green onions, sesame seeds, or fresh cilantro impart a refreshing burst and color, enhancing the rich flavors of the dish.

**Serving Recommendations**

Spicy crunchy tofu can be offered as an appetizer, a main course, or as part of a larger meal. It pairs beautifully with steamed rice, noodles, or a crisp salad. For a complete dining experience, consider serving it alongside stir-fried vegetables or a light soup.

**Conclusion**

The spicy crunchy tofu dish exemplifies the adaptability and versatility of tofu. With its crispy texture and bold flavors, this dish can be appreciated by anyone, regardless of dietary inclinations. Whether you are an experienced tofu lover or trying it for the first time, this dish is guaranteed to impress your taste buds.
