The Chevrolet Spark is among the most misleadingly named vehicles in recent times. While the Spark EV did possess impressive torque, the gasoline versions’ performance was rather lackluster. Two iterations were available in the U.S. from model years 2013 to 2022, featuring engines that were as underwhelming as they come. For instance, the second-gen Spark’s 1.4-liter inline-four only generated 98 horsepower and 94 pound-feet of torque. However, this can be a lot more thrilling in the right context.
In this scenario, the ideal context is a 2016 Polaris Ranger. Mad Goat Customs previously swapped in a Spark four-cylinder engine for a customer and recently shared a video on their YouTube channel (shoutout to Engine Swap Depot for pointing it out). This engine was selected because it’s quite compact compared to other car engines, thus making it somewhat simpler to install in the UTV than, say, a Subaru boxer-four.
In many front-wheel-drive vehicles, this engine was mounted transversely in the Spark. Here, it was reoriented longitudinally, with the former transaxle’s output shafts now connected to the front and rear differentials with gear ratios of 3.84 and 3.70, respectively. The rear differential was inverted to ensure proper rotation, and the transaxle utilized is not the original stock one. Instead, it’s the AW50-42LE four-speed automatic from a Saab 9-5 Turbo, which can be shifted using paddles from a Honda Pioneer.
To accommodate all of this, the frame was extended by seven inches, and a Ranger Diesel HST bed was attached to give the extended wheelbase a more natural appearance. Additionally, the frame was widened in certain areas to ensure sufficient space for the engine and transmission. Although it doesn’t appear entirely stock, it’s also challenging to discern that this UTV is driven by a car engine unless you lift the bed and see the Chevy four-cylinder tucked behind the cab.
Ecotec Engine Swapped Polaris Ranger
Integrating the various elements involved replacing the factory ECU with an Arduino controller and CAN buses, along with a few software adjustments. The engine was updated with manual-transmission software (this Spark generation was offered with either a five-speed manual or CVT) and detuned for better drivability to avoid breaking the axles. Despite this, the builder asserts it has enough power to cruise in fourth gear all day long.
While it may not be the most extreme engine swap, this represents a great application for an otherwise ordinary power plant. Somewhere, a Spark must exist with the potential for something cooler under the hood.
### The Consequence of a 1.4L Chevy Spark Engine When Installed in a Polaris Vehicle
#### Introduction
Integrating a 1.4L Chevy Spark engine into a Polaris vehicle represents a meaningful engineering challenge that can boost performance, efficiency, and adaptability. This article delves into the potential effects of such an engine swap, considering points such as power output, fuel economy, weight distribution, and overall vehicle behavior.
#### Engine Specifications
The 1.4L Chevy Spark engine is a four-cylinder, naturally aspirated powerplant recognized for its compactness and efficiency. It generally outputs around 98 horsepower and 94 lb-ft of torque, making it fitting for smaller vehicles. When integrated into a Polaris vehicle, typically crafted for off-road capabilities, the engine’s traits can result in various outcomes.
#### Performance Enhancements
1. **Power Output**: The 1.4L engine provides a slight power increase compared to certain stock Polaris engines, especially in models that utilize smaller displacement engines. This enhancement can lead to improved acceleration and responsiveness, particularly in city or mild off-road situations.
2. **Torque Delivery**: The torque profile of the 1.4L engine offers good low-end torque, which is useful for off-road applications that demand rapid throttle response. This can enhance the vehicle’s capability to traverse difficult terrains.
3. **Weight Considerations**: The lightweight design of the 1.4L engine can help preserve or enhance the power-to-weight ratio of the Polaris vehicle, crucial for maintaining agility and maneuverability in off-road environments.
#### Fuel Efficiency
One of the most prominent benefits of the 1.4L Chevy Spark engine is its fuel efficiency. Typically achieving approximately 30-40 miles per gallon in its initial application, this engine can lead to reduced operating costs for Polaris vehicles. Improved fuel economy is especially beneficial for recreational users who might spend long periods away from conventional roads.
#### Compatibility and Modifications
1. **Engine Mounting**: Installing a 1.4L engine in a Polaris vehicle necessitates custom engine mounts and possibly some adjustments to the engine compartment. Ensuring accurate positioning and securing the engine is essential for performance and safety.
2. **Transmission Adaptation**: The engine’s compatibility with the existing transmission system is crucial. A suitable transmission that can manage the engine’s power output and torque profile must be selected or adjusted.
3. **Electronics and Wiring**: Merging the engine’s electronic control unit (ECU) with the Polaris vehicle’s systems might require complex wiring and programming. This integration is vital for optimizing performance and ensuring all vehicle systems work seamlessly together.
#### Handling and Dynamics
The inclusion of a 1.4L engine can affect the handling characteristics of a Polaris vehicle. The engine’s weight distribution needs to be taken into account to maintain stability and control, especially during off-road activities. Proper suspension tuning may be required to adapt to the new engine’s weight and performance characteristics.
#### Conclusion
Installing a 1.4L Chevy Spark engine in a Polaris vehicle can offer several advantages, such as increased power output, better fuel efficiency, and a beneficial power-to-weight ratio. However, successful integration calls for meticulous consideration of compatibility, necessary modifications, and handling dynamics. When executed properly, this engine swap can revitalize a Polaris vehicle, enhancing its versatility and efficiency for both on-road and off-road escapades.
