It seems the times of grand spectacles for EV launches are fading away. Or at least, major announcements have taken a break. This is evident as Lexus, having settled into its comfort zone, has opted for a more understated approach with its unveiling of the new TZ SUV. This rebranded version of the Highlander marks the luxury brand’s inaugural electric three-row vehicle.
And while Lexus may not seem excited enough about the TZ to celebrate with champagne or fireworks, it still represents a significant milestone. It will provide Lexus with its own electric family vehicle with three rows and enhance the brand’s showroom offerings. Unlike Toyota’s strategy of replacing models, Lexus can introduce the TZ without sacrificing other options, in contrast to the Highlander, which led to the introduction of the TX, recently launched with both hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants. Similar to the Grand Highlander it’s derived from, the TX is expected to remain available for some time.
Though Lexus shared some initial specifications for the 2027 TZ (with no pricing details yet), it essentially follows the same concept as the Highlander but with a luxury focus. The standard battery is just shy of 77 kilowatt-hours, while the larger option comes close to 96 kWh, available on the Select trim and up. Lexus claims the larger battery can achieve at least 300 miles of range.
This aligns well with the 320-mile EPA estimate for the Highlander XLE and Limited variants. The base Highlander gets a rating of 270 miles with all-wheel drive, which will be standard for the TZ. We anticipate that the Lexus will be close to these figures. Additionally, the TZ features a variable front/rear torque distribution system capable of directing 100% of the available power to the rear wheels.
While this may sound high-tech, two factors are crucial to consider: Firstly, this is an EV, meaning there’s no physical link between the front and rear drive systems. The sophisticated “Direct4” all-wheel-drive mechanism operates primarily through software that manages the torque output of each drive unit independently. This leads to the second point: the term “available” carries significant meaning here. When torque is drawn from one or both drive units, the total “available” power decreases. What is 100% of 50%? A little hint: the answer lies in the question itself. And you thought you had escaped basic math.
Lexus will also present an optional rear-axle steering enhancement to optimize maneuverability in confined areas and improve stability during highway cruising. As far as we know, Toyota has no intentions of including this feature on the Highlander.
Although the announcement lacked depth in technical specifications, Lexus did TZ hint at some interior features for the EV. The front passenger and second-row seats come with options for both heating and cooling, as well as power-adjustable footrests. Lexus also highlighted the TZ’s unique “forged bamboo” interior surface treatments.
According to Lexus, the TZ will be available for purchase later this year. We can expect complete trim specifications and pricing to be revealed in the upcoming months.
