The future version of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class has just made its debut, and opinions are bound to be divided.
On Sunday, the 2027 Mercedes-Benz C-Class was unveiled featuring an electric powertrain to spearhead the upcoming generation of this model with nearly 400 miles of range, state-of-the-art electrical architecture, real fast charging capabilities, and an optional fullscreen dashboard. It encompasses a lot of features. For those not inclined toward an electric option, a gasoline variant of the next-generation C-Class, potentially showcasing a distinct design, will make an appearance later.
A brief overview of the new C-Class immediately reveals it as a Mercedes-Benz boasting the company’s latest design elements. The front is adorned with stars in the headlights, and an upright egg crate grille reminiscent of the W126 era, capable of being backlit with 1,050 illumination points. Large intakes flank the front bumper, which is a continuous piece. The A-pillars are angled back to enhance aerodynamics for efficiency while the rear tapers smoothly for improved aerodynamics. A full-width red panel with LED taillights, also featuring stars, enhances the back. Design cues and lighting details are derived from the C-Class’s SUV counterpart, the electric GLC-Class.
Within the electric C-Class, the interior closely mirrors that of the electric GLC-Class. The focal point is the expansive pillar-to-pillar screen that comprises the entire dashboard, referred to as Hyperscreen, which is a single piece of glass and measures 39.1 inches. Choosing not to include the Hyperscreen will result in three separate screens beneath one glass surface, covering the 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster, 14-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and 14-inch passenger touchscreen, collectively known as Mercedes’s Superscreen setup. The floating center console features two cupholders and two wireless phone chargers, along with a compartment for a small bag underneath. The vents have distinctive nubs, there’s a genuine volume knob, and, naturally, traditional stalks. Looking upward reveals an optional segmented glass roof that can switch between transparent and opaque options, embellished with 162 illuminated stars in the glass.
The electric C-Class shares components with the electric GLC-Class, which is advantageous. This results in a dual-motor powertrain (one motor at each axle) rated for 482 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque directed to all four wheels via a 2-speed transmission. It runs off a 94-kWh (usable) battery. Performance is expected to rival that of a V8-powered C-Class from a previous era with an AMG badge, even though this electric C-Class does not carry the renowned letters. The 0-60 mph acceleration is clocked at 3.98 seconds, with the top speed electronically capped at 130 mph. An optional rear-wheel steering system can adjust by as much as 4.5 degrees at the rear to reduce the turning radius to 36.7 feet, and the air suspension is designed to absorb road imperfections while anticipating conditions through Google Maps integration.
The 2-speed transmission is a notable feature, introduced in the brand’s electric range to enhance efficiency. Though official range figures have yet to be released and won’t arrive until closer to the launch date, anticipate just under 400 miles on a single charge.
When the battery is low, the electric C-Class can quickly recharge at a fast charging station, achieving a peak charge rate of 325 kW and allowing a 10-80% charge in 22 minutes while adding nearly 200 miles of range in 10 minutes.
Mercedes has not disclosed the pricing for the electric C-Class, which is expected to launch in the first half of 2027.
