Suddenly, there’s an enthusiast in charge at Nissan, and fans of sports cars should be thrilled—or, at the very least, paying attention.
On Tuesday in Yokohama, Japan, Nissan President and CEO Ivan Espinosa informed The Drive, “The sports cars are central to our company’s identity.” This came immediately after being queried about the Silvia’s role in Nissan’s future, to which Espinosa responded, “…it would, if I could, very soon, you know.”
Espinosa stated, “The current priorities, as mentioned this morning, are to finalize the plan, the Re:Nissan. After that, we have announced what is impending,” indicating a lineup of body-on-frame vehicles including the resurrected Xterra SUV.
However, it’s not solely the Silvia name that Espinosa could explore if the automaker began adding more sports cars to its offerings. “We’ve been active in that space for numerous generations (referring to sports cars), and there are various nameplates we could utilize. And certainly, if you ask part of my mind, I would love to expedite that. But the other side of my mind reminds me that we must exercise caution for now and proceed methodically,” Espinosa remarked.
Right after the responsible, well-thought-out answer, Espinosa grinned and added, “But surely we will see an increase in sports cars entering the lineup.”
Espinosa didn’t go into detail or clarify what forms these sports cars might take, but currently, Nissan dealerships feature one sports model: the Z. “Perhaps eventually we might see additional nameplates added to the sports category,” Espinosa conveyed.
Senior Vice President and Chief Planning Officer for Nissan North America, Ponz Pandikuthira, mentioned to The Drive on Tuesday in Yokohama, “[Espinosa’s] a strong supporter of accessible sports cars,” adding that, “He’s searching for the lightweight affordable sports car that the Silvia represented in its prime. And he’s discussed this numerous times, even prior to becoming CEO. So I believe if anyone in this company can figure out how to reintroduce a sports car similar to the Silvia, it’s him.”
So you’re implying there’s hope? Enthusiasts, be sure to voice your thoughts in the comments and online. Nissan is evidently attentive.
