This vehicle, dubbed the Boulder, honestly reminds me of the 2004 Ford Bronco concept with some Scout elements mixed in. If the Boulder’s interior seems familiar, it’s because it’s a somewhat refined version of the cabin seen in last fall’s Crater concept. The dashboard features the same “Bring Your Own Device” rail system designed for movable gauges and screens, with a cylindrical dash positioned below packed with sizable vertical gauges and large, chunky rotating dials. The difference is that the Boulder incorporates some materials that a conventional car would use, such as textiles and cushioning. The metal dash of the Crater could potentially pose an injury risk in a crash, but who am I to judge?
The automotive landscape is finally at a point where designs like these are becoming practical and achievable. Physical controls, including buttons, are making a comeback. Hyundai has acknowledged this regarding its upcoming models. On the Boulder’s dashboard, starting from the left, there are settings for diff locks, various four-wheel-drive modes, and an option that may be termed “X TREK” (the blurry image makes it somewhat difficult to decipher), along with possibly dynamic stability control. Tucked between them is a compass, and adjacent to every vertical display is a gear-like dial. The Crater had incorporated a set of climate control toggles below these sections, something most modern Hyundai and Kia cars have, but the Boulder does not include these features.
It’s a sleek design that allows the Boulder to confidently display its rugged tendencies. What’s particularly intriguing is that, instead of opting for a large touchscreen in the center, Hyundai has chosen smaller, modular screens that can theoretically be added, removed, or rearranged based on the owner’s preferences.

Many people genuinely enjoy technology in their cars, provided they have a say in how it’s integrated, and such an approach might facilitate that. A very lightweight heads-up display runs the length of the windshield, which appears impressive, though its practicality in terms of readability remains to be seen.
Collectively, the Boulder and its predecessor, the Crater, present a highly futuristic vision, but not in that stark, soulless, minimalist manner that car design has pursued over the past decade and into this one. It signals that Hyundai, alongside many other automakers, is earnestly endeavoring to harmonize technology and tactile elements pleasingly, rather than overwhelming everything with colossal screens and frustrating capacitive buttons. The Cyberpunk vibe has influenced the exteriors of several recent Hyundai vehicles, but it seems to be ready to make its way into the cabin at last.
