We’d argue this isn’t your grandfather’s LS6, but this nameplate has made a comeback before, and the previous iteration wasn’t phased out all that long ago. Initially introduced in the ’70s, the name was later applied to the 5.7-liter V8 which was removed from the Corvette’s engine lineup relatively early during the C6’s era. It was succeeded by the 6.2-liter LS3 in 2008.
Aside from the name, the updated LS6 shares virtually no similarities with its earlier versions, other than its primary role and size. It would be more accurate to describe it as an advancement of the LT2 it directly replaces—and indeed, it replaces it. The 535-horsepower LS6 will power the 2027 Corvette Stingray, Grand Sport, and Grand Sport X. That’s right, everyone is included (excluding the Z06 and ZR1 versions, obviously). Oh, and the E-Ray? It’s gone—or more precisely, replaced by the earlier mentioned Grand Sport X. Apologies to the critics. Those electrified Corvettes are here to stay.
As an advancement of the LT2, the LS6 adopts most of that engine’s fundamental traits. It retains the identical 4.4-inch bore diameter (a hallmark of GM small-block engines) and fits within the same dimensions (thus the default inclusion in the Stingray). Chevy’s performance engineers meticulously examined every aspect of the engine seeking enhancements.
Given that the bore size remains unchanged, it should come as no shock that Chevy discovered an additional half a liter of displacement by extending the piston stroke by 8 mm. This extra movement results in heightened piston speeds, which leads to increased heat. A new two-part water jacket enhances cooling around the hot spots in the combustion chamber (mainly near the exhaust valve and spark plug).
A revamped intake plenum enables the engine to intake more air, prompting them to enlarge the throttle body as well. An updated ECU has also provided Chevy’s engineers with greater control over fuel delivery and ignition timing, allowing them to elevate the compression ratio to 13:1—a figure that once necessitated leaded gasoline to achieve. Welcome to the future.
Consequently, the LS6 not only provides more power and torque than the LT2 but does so across the entire RPM range (up to its 6,600-RPM redline). The torque measurement? 520 pound-feet—the highest of any naturally aspirated production V8. Go ahead and look up the Godzilla; you’ll be let down.
LS6 lead engineer Mike Kociba compared the combined impact of these enhancements to equipping a small supercharger onto the LT2, all without the additional intricacies that forced induction entails.
For the time being, the LS6 will exclusively appear in the Corvette, with its engines manufactured in Flint, Michigan—not at GM’s Tonawanda facility, where the present LT2 is put together alongside the company’s small-block L84 and L87 truck engines. However, from what we’re hearing, it’s merely a matter of time before the updates of the LS6 extend to the rest of the engine family, at which point Tonawanda will likely be back in action.
