2027 BMW i3 Summary: Major Advancement of the 3 Series in Years

Electric vehicles have transformed efficiency and performance. But what about aesthetics—and what about legacy? What occurs when a top-tier sport sedan goes electric? The upcoming BMW 3 Series is set to introduce a battery-powered variant soon, and I recently had the opportunity for an early look: the 2027 BMW i3.

The i3 will be the premier model in BMW’s new Neue Klasse lineup. Designed around a fresh electric vehicle architecture, the Neue Klasse focuses on agile handling, cutting-edge digital interfaces, and rapid charging capabilities.

It’s unmistakably a BMW. At the front, there’s a wide LED-accented twin-kidney grille that extends into the front edges. Slender roof pillars and sculpted flanks lead to a raised shoulder line that culminates at the compact, tall trunk. At the rear, a strip of LED taillights completes the look, tucked into a shallow recess similar to the one housing the BMW emblem at the front.

Inside, the i3 presents a digital marvel. BMW refers to it as Panoramic iDrive. An angled screen in the center manages drive modes, infotainment, climate control, and charging details. Additionally, a digital display spans the base of the windshield, featuring further displays for audio tracks and navigation systems. Want to adjust a setting? You can tap and swipe through the options on the 17.9-inch touchscreen or steering-wheel buttons—or just say “hey, BMW,” and inform your digital assistant of your command. “Hey BMW, switch to Sport drive mode,” for instance.

Personalizing the system’s offerings on the main screen is straightforward. This is made possible by one of the i3’s so-called “superbrains”—highly capable electronic centers that oversee complete subsystems, handling everything from driving performance to hands-free driving functions. Regarding safety, the new BMW “Symbiotic Drive” system provides Level 2 hands-free operation. Enhanced safety is further supported by an optional head-up display, which integrates with the all-encompassing digital screen atop the dashboard. Regular updates to the BMW “brain” are downloadable as data via over-the-air updates.

All the onboard technology promises a joyful driving experience, per BMW. That joy primarily derives from a lithium-ion battery pack located beneath the floor, totaling 108.7 kilowatt-hours net. It features an 800-volt configuration that can achieve a peak charging rate of 400 kilowatts. This system is rated at a maximum of 463 hp and can accelerate from 0-60 mph in under five seconds—and that’s before any M versions make their debut.

It’s complemented by electric steering and a multi-link rear suspension. With optional dual-motor all-wheel drive, BMW also provides an adaptive suspension system. It includes a soft-stop feature for the electric motors that enhances recuperation, essentially nullifying mechanical braking in everyday use.

At 187.5 inches long and with a 114.1-inch wheelbase, the i3 is approximately 1.6 inches longer than the current 3-Series, with 2.2 inches more wheelbase. It’s larger yet appears sleeker and more balanced thanks to slender roof pillars and elevated windows.

However, the i3 will not be the first Neue Klasse model to enter the market. This summer, the BMW iX3 will make its debut as the electric version of one of BMW’s top models, the X3 SUV.

Pricing has yet to be announced, but when it launches in late 2026, the 2027 i3 will feature powered front sport seats, a synthetic-leather cabin, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, an NACS charging port, and options for wheels up to 21 inches. Choices will include Merino leather, an M Sport package with its own unique steering wheel design, and a parking system that utilizes your smartphone to assist the vehicle into tight spaces.

Does the i3 establish a new battery-powered standard for sport sedans? We’ll have to find out during an upcoming first drive when the i3 50 xDrive arrives in U.S. dealerships. Stay tuned.
