
This 1989 Toyota Corolla GT-S (AE92) featuring classic ‘Yoter-style desert racing stripes may have appeared on your social media feed before—it has been showcased at major events like SEMA and the Off-Road Expo. However, it’s one thing to display it in a convention hall, and quite another to compete in a grueling event such as the Mint 400. After extensive modifications and heavy enhancements, the “AWDROLA” (pronounced “odd-rola”) is shifting from a show vehicle to a racing contender.
It’s akin to Initial D, but this time the D represents Desert rather than Drift!
Randy Wimenta will pilot the vehicle with co-driver Will Wimenta in the 2026 Mint 400 Gambler/Hooptie-X Modified category under American Off-Road Racing (UNLTD Off-Road Racing & BITD Partnership). I had some discussions with Randy in his role as Marketing Partnerships & Community Manager for KC HiLites; he shared insights and a plethora of fantastic images with me via email last weekend.
“This endeavor commenced as a creative project honoring Toyota’s rally and desert off-road racing legacy,” Randy mentioned. “We aim to demonstrate that a refurbished 1989 Toyota platform can still thrive in the desert.” Admittedly, I don’t believe anyone has ever doubted an ’89 Land Cruiser or Toyota pickup’s capability in the desert, but this certainly enters uncharted territory for a two-door Corolla.
What’s visible here is an AE92 Corolla chassis fitted with an AE95 All-Trac powertrain. Certain suspension and steering components were bolstered for the Mint, and here’s a summary of the enhancements made:

- Custom Streetwise/Bilstein Strut System (Front)

Observing this project evolve from a concept resting on Instagram to competing in the Mint 400 represents a full-circle experience. It reminds us all that when passion is rooted in purpose, concepts can transform from an idea to a reality.”
“We had a busy weekend and the usual last-minute surprises—like not foreseeing that fabricating custom control arms and tie-rods would take four days,” Randy communicated to me via email while outlining his racing aspirations. This spirited little vehicle certainly won’t rival trophy trucks, but I appreciate its distinctiveness and charm. The Wimentas face a tough challenge preventing this small ‘Rola from getting high-centered in deep furrows or being crushed by a competitor’s 40-inch tire, yet one must admire the presence of something quirky and entertaining like this on the course.
