With four NASCAR Cup Series titles and 93 wins in the top division—including three Daytona 500 triumphs—there’s not much Jeff Gordon can’t manage with a steering wheel. But how about with a wrench?
The NASCAR Hall of Famer recently toured the Corvette assembly facility in Bowling Green, Kentucky, to assist in constructing the twin-turbo 5.5-liter LT7 V8 for his ZR1X. This experience is open to all buyers of Z06, ZR1, and ZR1X—not just racing icons. Captured in an Instagram video, Gordon and his father arrived at the factory at 9:39 AM on the build day, started assembling the short block at 10:09, and finished the long block assembly and cold test preparation by 1:27 PM.
After the cold test—where an electric motor spins the engine to check for manufacturing flaws—the LT7’s unique blue intake manifold was put on at 1:55 PM, with the turbos added approximately 30 minutes later. The engine was entirely assembled and inspected by 3:10 PM.
The LT7 produces 1,064 horsepower and 828 pound-feet of torque in the standard ZR1, while the ZR1X incorporates a hybrid system that contributes an additional 186 hp and 145 lb-ft, totaling 1,250 hp and 973 lb-ft. The electric motor powers the front wheels, similar to the E-Ray, providing the ZR1X with all-wheel drive.
This is presumably the only method the flagship Corvette can convert its remarkable horsepower and torque into a zero to 60 mph time of 1.68 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 8.67 seconds at 159 mph. These results were achieved on a prepared surface, but Chevy also tested a ZR1X on an unprepared surface, recording an 8.99-second quarter mile and a 1.89-second zero to 60 mph time.
It’s noteworthy that Jeff Gordon—who earned his reputation driving Chevy stock cars—was never going to forgo the ultimate Corvette, particularly since the ZR1X’s performance figures rival or exceed those of hypercars that cost tenfold. Priced at $207,395, the ZR1X is also around $120,000 less than a Ford Mustang GTD, a car the Chevy can also compete with on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
