On Thursday, in Big Sky, Montana, Rivian officially announced the establishment of the Rivian Adventure Department, abbreviated as RAD. Rivian is suggesting this marks the beginning of something bigger as we transition from unique passion projects and software innovations to full-fledged products and experiences.
Until now the RAD team functioned as a skunkworks initiative with staff collaborating as a passion project to create exciting innovations. Their adventures and creations have been the material of enthusiasts’ fantasies.
One of the RAD team members? Gardner Nichols, an engineer at Rivian who modified his personal first-gen quad-motor R1T and competed in the Pikes Peak Hill Climb in 2023, setting a record without factory support. Gardner returned to the Pikes Peak Hill Climb in 2024 with factory support in a second-generation R1T Quad and established a new record for electric pickup trucks at the event. Suddenly, Rivian became serious.
All the efforts from the RAD department began to converge and hinted at future directions with the debut of the 2026 Rivian R1 Quads. The new Kick Turn 360-degree tank turn feature was crafted by the RAD team, allowing the vehicle to pivot in a circular motion.
Rivian, the electric vehicle maker recognized for its groundbreaking approach to eco-friendly transportation, has officially inaugurated its performance sector, termed Rivian Automotive Division (RAD). This new division is set to propel Rivian’s electric vehicles (EVs) into the high-performance domain, similar to the distinguished performance sectors of well-established auto brands like BMW M and Mercedes-AMG.
The Concept Behind RAD
The introduction of RAD is a calculated effort by Rivian to address a growing demographic of performance-driven consumers who desire not only sustainability but also thrilling driving experiences. The division aims to refine the performance attributes of Rivian’s current models, inclusive of the R1T pickup and R1S SUV, while upholding the brand’s dedication to environmentally responsible technology.
Performance Upgrades
RAD will emphasize several critical areas to enhance the performance of Rivian vehicles:
1. Powertrain Improvement: RAD will create sophisticated powertrain innovations that optimize acceleration, torque delivery, and overall efficiency. This entails fine-tuning the electric engines and battery systems to offer a more exhilarating driving experience.
2. Suspension and Handling: The division will develop specialized suspension frameworks that elevate handling and riding comfort, enabling improved cornering and stability at elevated speeds. This will cater to enthusiasts who expect precision control in their driving dynamics.
3. Aerodynamics and Styling: RAD will investigate aerodynamic refinements that not only boost performance but also aid in the vehicle’s range. This includes alterations to body design and the introduction of performance-focused aesthetic features
Final Thoughts
With the unveiling of RAD, Rivian stands ready to transform the performance electric vehicle marketplace. By concentrating on enhancing the driving experience while remaining committed to its sustainable mission, Rivian hopes to draw in a diverse clientele that values both high performance and environmental conscientiousness. As the automotive landscape continues to evolve, RAD represents a critical advancement for Rivian in solidifying its role as a key contender in the performance EV arena.
