As far as we are aware, this year’s CTR stays the same as last year’s model. However, all prices are on the upswing, especially during this period of tariffs, and that includes the most celebrated compact sports car available.
Naturally, the Type R’s rivals have also seen price changes. The Toyota GR Corolla now starts at $41,115 and includes fewer features than the Civic offers. The Volkswagen Golf R is priced at no less than $50,730. I mentioned yesterday how the price increases for the Subaru WRX likely impacted its sales; the 2025 version began at $38,920, and we should hear about the 2026 updates later this week.
The only noteworthy deal for a robust sport compact straight off the lot, assuming you can avoid dealer markups, is the Hyundai Elantra N. At $36,345—$750 higher than last year—it’s looking like an increasingly better value. All factors being equal, I’d prefer the Honda, but for an additional $12,000? It would be unwise not to opt for 95% of that experience for 75% of the cost.
The optimistic viewpoint here, at least from a Honda executive’s perspective, is that this price increase offers more space between the Civic Si and Prelude compared to the Type R. The Si is a delightfully enjoyable daily driver, but at $32,690 for 2026, it’s climbing in price too. As for the Prelude, I haven’t met anyone who believes the hybrid coupe should warrant $43,195 on paper, even if it’s easily the most aesthetically pleasing of the options.
Realistically, if the Civic Si had just a bit more power, I think it would be ideal for most driving enthusiasts, myself included. Over the past 20 years, the Civic’s weight has gone up by about 300 pounds, yet the Si has added no additional horsepower to make up for that. It’s unfortunate, as the modern Civic ranks among the best economy cars available today.
