In case you thought Ram is only about Hemi engines these days, the truck manufacturer has just revealed that fans of the Power Wagon will finally receive what they’ve long wished for: Cummins diesel power. The 6.7-liter high-output diesel engine will be offered for the 2027 model year, along with several other upgrades for those who anticipate their trucks to handle just about any task.
“For years, our customers have been requesting the inclusion of Cummins in the Power Wagon,” stated Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis in the company’s announcement. “And if our recent product releases indicate anything, it’s that Ram is providing options to customers and the trucks they desire. Pairing the Power Wagon with the Cummins turbo diesel encapsulates everything our dedicated Ram enthusiasts expect: off-road prowess combined with the leading diesel in the HD category. It’s the Power Wagon they’ve been anticipating.”
True to Ram’s philosophy of going big or going home, the Cummins Power Wagon will deliver a class-leading 1,075 pound-feet of torque alongside its relatively modest (which sounds almost absurd to say) 430 horsepower. According to Ram, the Power Wagon, equipped with its 31-gallon fuel tank, can achieve 600 miles on a single refuel. Additionally, a new load-leveling rear air suspension option will make loading for long trips a bit easier.
Ram assures that the Cummins-enhanced truck will maintain most of the features that make the Power Wagon so appealing to its user base, including solid front and rear axles along with electronic locking differentials. The newly designed rear differential offers a 3.42:1 final drive ratio and 38mm axle shafts—all designed to drive those 20-inch wheels wrapped in 34-inch all-terrain tires. Today’s tire-and-lube workers must be exceptionally strong.
And there’s no need to worry, Ram didn’t sacrifice any prized features to introduce a diesel Power Wagon. You’re still getting the same off-road capability (13.2 inches of ground clearance with a 26.1-degree approach angle, a 26.0-degree departure angle, and a 20.6-degree breakover angle) along with ample protection for when you deplete that capability. Rock rails and underbody skid plates (shielding the DEF tank, fuel tank, and transfer case) are all standard.
The 2027 Power Wagon is set to debut alongside the revived Ram 1500 (now SRT!) TRX this summer, in what Kuniskis has promised will be a transformative year for the brand. We’re eager to see what follows.
