Subaru WRX STI Debut Set for January 9; Car Will Not Be Electric

Get ready Subaru family, because your wish list might soon become a reality. The STI badge is making a comeback.

That’s a bold assertion and as you might expect, it comes with a few contingencies. However, the fact is undeniable and it’s no mere speculation. On Christmas Day, Subaru shared a teaser video on Instagram featuring a blue WRX showcasing an STI badge on its grille. The video concludes with a reveal date of January 9, 2025. That date coincides with the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon.

Subaru issued a press statement accompanied by a computer-generated image highlighting its 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon exhibit, which is displayed above. That image features all the vehicles Subaru listed as debuting at the event, except for one. Notably, Subaru does not reference a vehicle that is prominently displayed and obscured in the image. It appears to be a WRX STI sedan, which may also be shown digitally above the veiled vehicle itself.

The teaser video above reveals an STI badge on the grille of a current-generation WRX sedan. The wheels on the car in the teaser appear similar to those of the existing WRX tS available in America. A quick shot of the car suggests it is powered by a boxer engine, with sounds recognizable as it accelerates through the power band, confirming its sedan form.

While this may dampen expectations for a new WRX STI hatchback, which had garnered excitement after a concept unveiled in November at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, it could be just the beginning. The gasoline-powered hot-hatch concept was displayed near an STI-badged EV concept, which Subaru’s design head indicated is “under consideration.” The Japanese manufacturer is actively exploring future performance models and is still evaluating potential directions for powertrains.

The major uncertainty remains whether this STI-badged WRX will be available in the U.S. market. The Drive contacted Subaru of America representatives, but the automaker (like much of the world) is currently on holiday hiatus. We will update this story when we receive a response.

Regardless of the circumstances, a new WRX STI is set to debut shortly after the new year, which is sure to excite enthusiasts worldwide. It seems that 2026 is poised to kick off with a boxer-powered thrill.

**Subaru WRX STI Unveiling Set for January 9; Vehicle Will Remain Gasoline-Powered**

Subaru has officially confirmed the unveiling date for the eagerly awaited WRX STI, slated for January 9. This announcement has sparked considerable enthusiasm among car enthusiasts, especially since it clarifies that the new iteration will not switch to an electric powertrain, upholding its reputation as a performance-focused vehicle.

The WRX STI has been renowned for its rally-inspired dynamics, all-wheel-drive prowess, and turbocharged engines. As part of Subaru’s dedication to its performance lineage, the choice to retain the WRX STI as a gasoline-fueled model resonates with the brand’s aim to provide an exhilarating driving experience. This decision stands in contrast to the wider automotive industry’s momentum toward electrification, distinguishing the WRX STI in today’s market.

Subaru has hinted that the forthcoming WRX STI will boast upgrades in performance, technology, and aesthetics. While detailed information regarding the engine and performance metrics remains undisclosed, fans can anticipate the continuation of Subaru’s renowned turbocharged flat-four engine, celebrated for its unique growl and responsive power output. The vehicle is also expected to integrate advanced performance elements like enhanced suspension systems, improved aerodynamics, and updated technologies to bolster driving dynamics and driver involvement.

In addition to performance advances, the WRX STI is likely to include contemporary safety and connectivity features, making sure it aligns with today’s consumer expectations while sustaining its sporty essence. The inclusion of advanced driver-assistance technologies and infotainment integrations will likely appeal to a wider demographic, including younger drivers seeking a combination of performance and practicality.

The choice to abandon an electric model for the WRX STI might also reflect the brand’s acknowledgment of its dedicated customer base, which appreciates the conventional performance characteristics of the vehicle. Subaru’s commitment to preserving the WRX STI’s internal combustion heritage might enhance its standing within the specialized market of performance sedans.

As the launch day nears, excitement is palpable within the automotive community. The WRX STI carries a rich legacy in motorsport and among car enthusiasts, and its upcoming model promises to maintain the brand’s reputation for delivering exhilarating driving experiences. With the unveiling set for January 9, both Subaru supporters and performance vehicle lovers are eager to discover how the new WRX STI will progress while remaining true to its lineage.
