
If those seeking assistance can’t be picky, it seems Nissan is coming out of its financial struggles. The car manufacturer is reportedly interested in utilizing platforms from other automakers, but only if the exchange is mutual.
“Nissan is receptive to partnerships with other car manufacturers,” stated Ponz Pandikuthira, Nissan Americas product planning chief, in a conversation with Automotive News during a media event in Nashville, close to its headquarters in Franklin, Tennessee. He mentioned that Nissan is having “discussions” with several potential collaborators and that the initial agreement might be confirmed within the year. Yet, these agreements include one crucial condition.
“It needs to be reciprocal,” Pandikuthira emphasized. “We wouldn’t partner solely to acquire a vehicle, platform, or technology. That’s what transforms it into a long-term alliance rather than just a transaction.”
Regarding which platforms Nissan may provide to other manufacturers, Pandikuthira indicated that Nissan has “some exciting plans for the upcoming generation of Frontier” and that “we’d be keen on discussing” with any automaker wishing to develop a distinct model using its platform. That body-on-frame architecture is also likely to support a revived Xterra and accommodate hybrid powertrains.
On the topic of hybrids, Pandikuthira noted that other automakers are showing interest in Nissan’s e-Power hybrid system. Anticipated to debut in North America next year with the revamped Rogue crossover, e-Power is a distinctive series hybrid system where the gasoline engine never directly powers the wheels. Nissan has hesitated to introduce e-Power in this market due to challenges with vibration and fuel efficiency at highway speeds, but asserts to have resolved these issues with the latest third-generation model.
Pandikuthira is also eager to collaborate with other manufacturers on EVs for improved economies of scale, stating that Nissan is open to joint development of an EV “or possibly a range of EVs.”
