This Teriyaki Tofu Is A Weekly Highlight In My Life

Do you remember the tofu from the ramen bowls? I can’t get enough of it. I showcased this bowl combination on Instagram recently and received numerous requests for the recipe, which leads us to this moment!

Recently, I’ve been doing the following:

  • Serving up some steamed jasmine rice
  • Adding a scoop of that saucy, chewy tofu on top
  • Incorporating some steamed broccoli (or air-fried broccoli!)
  • Top it all off with a zesty, slightly spicy kimchi mayo
  • Finishing with green onions and/or togarashi or a sesame-seed sprinkle

If you take away anything from this, just be sure to make the teriyaki tofu. That shredded tofu is absolutely delightful. It gets enveloped and caramelized with teriyaki sauce (store-bought, no issue) and infused with just enough fresh garlic to make your home smell like a restaurant, so, yeah, I’m quite enamored with it.

It’s a recipe for a high-flavor, fast and easy dinner, topped with a creamy sauce, that’s also conveniently loaded with fiber and protein. I might sound like a salesperson right now, but if that’s how my legacy for these teriyaki tofu bowls unfolds, then so be it!

I hope you enjoy this combination!

Instructions

  1. Prep Tofu: Wrap the tofu in several paper towels, or a clean kitchen cloth, and press it to extract some moisture. (I use the high-protein tofu from Trader Joe’s which needs minimal pressing.)
  2. Grate Tofu: Carefully grate the tofu using a box grater, turning it into fine shreds.
  3. Fry Tofu: Heat oil over medium-high heat in a nonstick skillet. Add the tofu and fry for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it turns golden brown and slightly crispy.
  4. Sauce It: Pour in the teriyaki sauce and grated garlic into the hot skillet. Toss everything together. (Your kitchen will smell incredible when the garlic hits!)
  5. Make Kimchi Mayo: Combine the kimchi and mayo; season as desired.
  6. Serve: Plate the tofu over rice, accompanied by broccoli and a dollop of the kimchi mayo. I like to top it with green onions, additional teriyaki sauce, and a spicy topping like togarashi!

Three Additional Transformative Tofu Bowls

**Teriyaki Tofu Bowls with Zesty Kimchi Mayonnaise: A Fusion Marvel**

In the world of culinary creativity, fusion dishes have established themselves, presenting a delightful mix of flavors from various cuisines. One such dish that has captured attention is the Teriyaki Tofu Bowl with Zesty Kimchi Mayonnaise. This dish merges the sweet-savory essence of Japanese teriyaki with the bold kick of Korean kimchi, achieving a harmonious blend that excites the palate.

**The Elements of the Dish**

1. **Tofu**: Central to this dish is tofu, a flexible ingredient recognized for its capacity to absorb flavors. Tofu is a fantastic source of protein, particularly for those adhering to a plant-based diet. In this preparation, the tofu is generally pressed to remove surplus moisture, then marinated in a rich teriyaki sauce before being pan-fried or baked for a crispy outer layer.

2. **Teriyaki Sauce**: The teriyaki sauce is a staple Japanese condiment made from soy sauce, mirin, sake, and sugar. It provides a glossy glaze and a sweet-savory flavor to the tofu, making it incredibly delicious. Some variations may add ginger or garlic for enhanced flavor.

3. **Zesty Kimchi Mayonnaise**: This component infuses a Korean flair into the dish. Kimchi, a fundamental part of Korean cuisine, is a fermented vegetable dish, often comprising napa cabbage and radishes, seasoned with chili pepper, garlic, ginger, and various spices. When mixed with mayonnaise, it forms a creamy, spicy, and tangy sauce that pairs beautifully with the teriyaki tofu.

4. **Rice or Grains**: The foundation of the bowl is typically a layer of rice, such as jasmine or sushi rice. For a healthier option, many might choose brown rice, quinoa, or a blend of grains.

5. **Vegetables**: Fresh vegetables add vibrancy, texture, and nutrition to the bowl. Common selections include steamed broccoli, edamame, sliced bell peppers, and grated carrots. These not only elevate the visual appeal but also provide essential vitamins and minerals.

6. **Garnishes**: Finally, the bowl can be adorned with sesame seeds, chopped scallions, or strips of nori. These add an additional layer of taste and a touch of sophistication to the presentation.

**Preparation and Assembly**

To create the Teriyaki Tofu Bowls with Zesty Kimchi Mayonnaise, begin by marinating the tofu in teriyaki sauce for at least 30 minutes. While the tofu marinates, prepare the rice or grains according to package directions. Next, blend kimchi with mayonnaise to craft the zesty sauce.

Once the tofu has marinated, cook it until it turns a golden brown. Assemble the bowl by placing a generous amount of rice at the bottom, followed by the teriyaki tofu. Arrange the vegetables around the tofu, and drizzle the zesty kimchi mayonnaise over the top. Finish with your choice of garnishes.

**Nutritional Benefits**

This meal is not only satisfying for the senses but also nutritious. Tofu offers a premium source of plant-based protein, while the vegetables contribute fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants. The zesty kimchi mayonnaise provides probiotics that are advantageous for gut health, owing to the fermentation process of kimchi.

**Conclusion**

Teriyaki Tofu Bowls with Zesty Kimchi Mayonnaise showcase the beauty of culinary fusion, blending elements from Japanese and Korean cuisines. This dish is ideal for those wanting a flavorful, plant-based meal that is both filling and nourishing. Whether you’re an experienced chef or a home cook, this recipe is guaranteed to impress and satisfy.
