Incredible things can occur within a few months with sufficient inspiration. Such as, seemingly discovering an additional 7 miles of EPA-estimated range.
On late Friday, General Motors revealed that the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt is now available for purchase at a price of $28,995 (including the $1,395 destination charge), featuring 262 miles of EPA-estimated range. This positions the Chevy Bolt as the most affordable EV currently on the U.S. market, outpacing the Nissan Leaf in range.
The Chevrolet Bolt not only is priced lower but also offers more distance compared to the Leaf, which until recently held the title of value leader.
It’s important to note, however, that this information comes with some caveats. The Bolt’s range is currently EPA estimated but has not been EPA rated. Moreover, in a somewhat mysterious turn of events, the Bolt now boasts 7 additional miles of estimated range compared to its initial launch in the fall. Initially, the Bolt was projected to have a range of 255 miles. This newfound range appears to have been discovered recently as Chevrolet’s own website and configurator still list 255 miles.
However, the 255-mile estimation would have placed the Bolt below the Leaf, which offers an EPA-rated range of 259 miles, even though the Bolt remains less expensive than the Leaf. The price gap? The Leaf costs $2,490 more than the Bolt. That’s a significant amount in today’s high-cost environment.
The Bolt comes well-equipped even in its base configuration with an 11.3-inch touchscreen featuring Google integration, though it lacks Apple CarPlay or Android Auto (both available in the Leaf), adaptive cruise control, automatic climate control, and a Tesla-like NACS charging port. Notably, the Bolt can be outfitted with GM’s excellent Level 2 hands-free driver-assistance system, Super Cruise, though not for the base price of $28,995.
Chevrolet has confirmed that the 2027 Bolt is available for sale and is being delivered to dealerships.
