
Subaru made its initial foray into the EV market in 2023 with the Solterra SUV. This year, it’s firmly establishing its presence with two additional models: the 2026 Uncharted we discussed last week, and the 2026 Subaru Trailseeker.
Similar to the Uncharted, the Trailseeker is a product of collaboration with Toyota. In this instance, the visually similar bZ Woodland aligns with the Trailseeker’s specifications—but Subaru insists it played a more significant role in this vehicle’s creation. This is evident in certain aspects and features more than others.
Start from the outside. The Trailseeker’s design captures the same essence as Subaru’s well-established Crosstrek and Outback. A body-colored frontal panel features a Subaru emblem and not much else, while LED daytime running lights are integrated at the hood line. The actual LED headlights are positioned below, nestled into black plastic cladding that extends back around the front wheels. With some robust chamfers and contours along its wagon profile, and additional cladding around the rear wheels, it could easily be mistaken for a gas-powered Subaru. Cladding elevates the back end, with an LED light strip crossing the tailgate that illuminates the SUBARU branding. With the bold departures seen in Subaru’s latest Outback and Forester, the Trailseeker offers a more cohesive and familiar aesthetic.
The interior of the Trailseeker harmonizes perfectly with Subaru’s functional history as well. It’s a straightforward space to navigate, featuring a compact digital display for speed, regenerative braking, and more, positioned above a rounded steering wheel. The wide console accommodates dual phone chargers and drive-mode selectors, alongside storage beneath. Above that, a large 14.0-inch display sourced from Toyota holds down the dashboard, complete with wireless CarPlay and dual dials for climate control. That, along with several horizontal surfaces, tells the overall story. There are no distractions, except for those displays.
The dual-motor, all-wheel-drive Trailseeker features a 74.7-kWh battery and is rated for 375 hp. The battery fully discharges when you drive a Premium-trim version for 281 miles. That shrinks to 274 miles in the higher-end Limited and Touring trims. All models come equipped with a NACS port for charging, but, similar to other Subaru EVs and the related Toyota bZ, charging tops out at 150 kW. Under these conditions, charging from 10% to 80% takes 28 minutes.
These underwhelming charging specifications still benefit from the fundamentals of electric vehicles: even at a hefty 4,465 pounds, the Trailseeker Premium can achieve 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds, outpacing any WRX and most STIs, too. And neither of those can tow up to 3,500 pounds.
On the roadway, the Trailseeker offers commendable ride comfort, courtesy of a suspension system developed by Subaru featuring struts and multi-links. Base models roll on 18-inch wheels, while the 20-inch versions on the Tourings we tested don’t seem to incur a downside apart from slightly reduced range. The Trailseeker also boasts better steering feedback compared to the smaller Uncharted, but like it, has four modes of brake regeneration without a single-pedal driving mode, which would enhance the experience of maneuvering this sturdily built SUV through the hills near Laguna Beach in fog and rain.
In off-road conditions, the Trailseeker truly shines. Its standard all-wheel-drive configuration is equipped with hill-start assist, adjustable torque distributions, a traction control system with drive modes for snow, dirt, and mud, and a system for controlling downhill speed. Engage all the features and unleash the Trailseeker on a rugged mud path, and its 8.5 inches of ground clearance, along with its all-season tires, can spin briefly before securing traction and powering through moderately tough slippery areas. It performs similarly to an Outback in providing the 90 percent of off-road capability that most drivers actually require.
It excels in space efficiency, featuring powered front seats that leave several inches of headroom above my six-foot height and almost as much in the rear. Measuring 190.8 inches in length with a 112.2-inch wheelbase, it boasts a cargo area with 74.0 cubic feet of capacity, or 71.8 cubic feet with the panoramic roof taking the place of the standard metal roof. Behind the rear seats, there are 32.2 cubic feet available, providing Outback-like room for four bags or more granola than any typical Costco carries. A 75-inch item will easily fit behind the front seats, indicating that the Trailseeker is fully equipped for ski trips or bringing home a Christmas tree.
Standard safety features include blind-spot detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with lane centering, and hands-free driving assistance that operates at speeds of 25 mph or less. Voice controls can manage temperature, phone functions, and audio, in case that large touchscreen isn’t sufficient.
The $41,445 Trailseeker Premium comes with a powered driver’s seat, a powered tailgate, 18-inch wheels, dual wireless smartphone charging pads, four USB-C ports, and a 14-inch touchscreen. The $44,445 Limited variants feature 20-inch wheels, a 120-volt outlet in the cargo area, Harman Kardon audio system, a surround-view camera, a power front passenger seat, and a hands-free powered tailgate. The $48,005 Touring trims add a panoramic glass roof, ventilated front seats, and options for two-tone blue paint ($395) and leather upholstery ($300). If you opt for Crystal White paint and leather, add another $100.
Faster charging would be advantageous, and increased range wouldn’t be unwelcome either. Nonetheless, the Trailseeker demonstrates that Subaru has selected a fitting direction for EVs that will resonate with its dedicated followers.
