The off-road driving techniques I typically employ don’t entirely translate in an EV as they do in traditional vehicles—there’s no left-foot braking or clutch slipping. In many respects, an EV powertrain excels off-road. You can theoretically control power output with extreme precision, and there’s no need to rev an engine for torque.

But at that moment, with the windshield showing only sky and the parking sensors alerting me, I was genuinely struggling. Each time I attempted to apply pressure to the accelerator, the vehicle wanted to spin its tires, causing it to gradually and steadily slide down and left towards a large tree.

It was the ideal moment for four-wheel steering to shine.

Alex was monitoring the situation, ready to shout if any carbon was on the verge of damage, as I switched to CrabWalk mode and cautiously, cautiously, pressed the accelerator lightly. The vehicle discovered traction where no other truck could and deftly moved away from danger and over the obstacle.

I had previously maneuvered the same obstacle in a third-gen 4Runner without any fuss. I was genuinely impressed with how well the Hummer managed its bulk through some exaggerated goat paths, but do you actually need your SUV to be wide enough for a football game?

Ultimately, this is not a vehicle that necessitates logic. It’s a toy. Just as many Lamborghinis never find their way onto a racetrack, the Hummer’s abilities are more of a “not that you would, but you could” variety.
